I don't think it's meant for Buffalo to win but miracles happen especially on ice.

Gretzky to return as Coyotes coach

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Wayne Gretzky has agreed to a five-year contract to remain the Phoenix Coyotes' coach.

"It is an important, important event for the Phoenix Coyotes," chief executive officer Jeff Shumway said at Wednesday's news conference. "This completes our management group. We are very, very happy to get this done."

Gretzky, the NHL's all-time leading scorer, made his coaching debut last season and guided the Coyotes to a 38-39-5 record.

"I'm excited about the next five years," Gretzky said. "Obviously, our goal is still the same: to make our team a Stanley Cup championship team."

Despite a disappointing debut season as an NHL coach, Gretzky's decision was not a surprise. Owner Jerry Moyes said recently that he expected Gretzky, who is also the team's managing partner, to return.

It was a trying first season for the 44-year-old Gretzky.

The first setback came when Brett Hull, a likely future Hall of Famer brought in to provide veteran leadership, retired five games into the season. Injuries to goalie Brian Boucher in the exhibition season and Ladislav Nagy in February also hurt the team.

Gretzky dealt with the death of his mother, Phyllis, in December. His grandmother, Betty Hockin, died three weeks later.

Assistant coach and friend Rick Tocchet was arrested for allegedly running an illegal sports gambling ring in February. The scandal touched Gretzky when it was

Buffalo had too many injuries... Jay Mckee not playing made all the difference.
We lost at least one player to an injury in every play-off game. sad
Still, the Canes had a hard time beating our rookies and call-ups from the Amerks biggrin .
Good news: Tim Connolly was well enough to fly down to watch the game yesterday. biggrin That was the first time he was allowed on a plane since his injury.Still praying for a complete recovery.Still way too soon to know if he'll ever play again.

Anyway, I'm gonna cheer for the Oilers now. I've seen many games with Rolleson and Peca when they were Sabres, I loved them ....I wish them luck now. biggrin

hug It's okay , the Sabres are getting some long over due respect. Injuries and bad officiating did them in. But that's hockey for ya.
There's always next year.

Saw parts of the game last night, it was pretty exciting. Next game they should get down to business and keep the scoring down.
Can you believe those refs? I'm thinking they need a couple more refs on the ice with the new hockey. They can't seem to see much that happens. And maybe some cams on their helmets so we can see what they didn't see.

Anyway, go Oilers!!! biggrin

We had the OLN announcers, I missed Don Cherry!!! bawl He IS Mr Hockey nod
I love him. The announcers are the worst part of watching OLN, they do a good job, but it's not the same as seeing and hearing the hometown guys. Our announcers are great, almost all former hockey players and "old school" hockey play by play people.
