moral dilemma (and no, it's got nothing to do with sex)

i have a question, kind of a poll i want to take i guess, about a minor dilemma i'm in.

i am moving on the 29th of this month. the movers are coming on the 28th. i have been slowly selling the stuff i'm not taking with me. one of these items is my couch. i listed it on craigslist last night for 50 bucks. i listed the price so low not because its a shitty couch (its actually pretty nice for what it is) but because i knew i was on a time crunch and i wanted to guarantee a sale.

well, someone is supposed to come tomorrow afternoon to buy it for the listed price. the problem is someone else just beat that price and offered me $100. do i cancel the arrangement with the girl and sell it to the highest bidder (this was not listed as an auction) or do i stick to my word and sell it to her for 50 bucks? we've spoken on the phone and she was very excited to get the couch for so little. i would hate to be a prick now and tell her $100 or no deal. on the other hand, i don't know her and i have to look out for myself...moving is expensive and every dollar counts.

i really would feel like an ass if i backed out of our spoken deal but i'd also feel like a fool if i lose out on an extra 50 bucks.

what would you do and why?

Take the hundred and cut your losses. You don't owe chica nothing. You do not owe her. She is not a friend or relative. Just give her a call to let her know it is gone. wink

number one: I love the fact that you use sallysassalot as your name. Props onwards and upwards. I haven't been here in a while, obviously.

number two: did you have a signed contract with the girl of $50? I would say that if you contact her and explain the situation (someone offering $100). See how she feels. She may not want to buy it at that point. Just be honest, Sassy wink

If you have to ask, it's more than worth it.

I would phone her up with apologies and sneak in a lil white lie..

say your b/f, hubby, brother whoever took a call when you were out and sold it yo someone else, without letting you know it was promised to her.. say your sorry but the couch has gone and there is nothing you can do about it.

Then sell it for 100 bucks to the 2nd person cool

no actually after that, phone up the 2nd person and say someone was on the phone and offered $150 for it, and you would love to sell it but you need the money and if he/she can match $150, you would be glad to sell it to them, seeing as they put in the offer first

woot! BINGO! and you are up $100 from the 1st caller..

you should give it to the first person. You already made the arrangement. Of course, you can do whatever you want, it's still yours. But the right thing to do would be stick to the original deal you made. thumbs up!

Rudy

be honorable and stick with the $50 girl

but the "no later than noon" idea is pretty cool too - tell her any later than that, the deal's off smile
