The most common theory I've seen for the ending is that the girl, her mother, and the cop all died during the accidents at the beginning of the movie, and that what they experience in Silent Hill is a sort of combination hell/purgatory. Probable enough, but having played a few of the games, I don't think that's the case.

What I'm guessing is that Alessya drew the daughter into the town for the following reasons:

1. She could then use the girl's mother to infiltrate the church where the cult was based, which was protected from the tainted side of Silent Hill. When the mother was wounded, Alessya was set free into the church, and was able to extract her revenge.

2. She could use the daughter, her seperated "good half," to combine with her "evil half" and escape the town with her oblivious mother. I'd imagine that the reason they're still stuck in the alternate world when they return home is out of the will of the evil soul that now resides in the daughter.

The reason the father sees a relatively normal abandoned town when he investigates Silent Hill is because he has no bearing on Alessya's plot, and would probably serve to hinder it. Seeing as the tainted Silent Hill is a creation of her own personal hatred, I'd imagine she also has some control on who enters her version of the town and who doesn't.

It seems to be setting us up for a movie sequel that would follow a similar plotline to the second video game: a man, having lost his wife several years ago, recieves a letter from her telling him to to come to Silent Hill. Sean Bean even looks like an aged version of this game's protaginist, so I'm sure that when a movie sequel happens, this will be the case.

I agree with all that. Except I do think Silent Hill is purgatory and that the ladies were both dead. Thing that bothered me was her motive for takin the girl out there in the first place. Sleepwalkin? The girl sleepwalks so you drive to a ghost town. Was there any advertisement for the Silent Hill cure? That was such a weak Maguffin.
