how old until you let your kids go to public bathrooms by themselves?
Boy Molested In MD Restaurant
Wednesday, April 19, 2006
WBAL Radio and The Associated Press

Police in Carroll County have charged a 23-year-old Westminster man with molesting a seven-year-old boy in the bathroom of a Ruby Tuesday restaurant.

Police say Jasen Anthony Weigman put his hand over the boy's mouth, forced him into an empty stall and told the boy he'd hurt him if he screamed, according to the Carroll County Times.

Authorities tell the newspaper that after Weigman molested the boy, he asked if he could take the boy's photograph. When the boy responded "No," Weigman let him leave the bathroom. evil

The boy was crying when he returned to his father. After the boy told his father what happened, they found Weigman and he was later arrested.

Weigman was charged with second-, third-, and fourth-degree sex offenses, as well as second-degree assault, perverted practice and false imprisonment.

He is being held at the Carroll County Detention Center on 350-thousand dollars bond. A bail review is set for Thursday.

same here.
And if my nephews get lost in public, we've instructed them to walk up to a woman, preferebly one that has kids to tell them they're lost.

We've told them not to go up to men at all--even male security guards.

The vast majority of these types of violent crimes are committed by males. The chances are just better for them.

One time I was at the beach and they were approached by an old man who liked their sand castle. He appeared harmless enough, but I found myself unable to take my eyes off of him or them and unwilling to move more than 10 feet away from them the entire time---I'm just that guarded.

Oprah did a show on how easily kids went with strangers. It was eye opening. Out of several kids only ONE did not fall for the man's line of "Would you help me find my puppy?"

When Oprah went to the one boy who did not go with the man's mother she asked her "What did you do? How did you teach him? He was the ONLY ONE who did not go with our "stranger"." The mom said she scared him to death. Told her son that strangers would kill him...he'd never see his family again etc.

I'm like Jersey. I've told my kids to scream their heads off...cause the biggest scene in the world. Scream "This is not my mother/father!!!!" and RUN as far from the person as quickly as possible.

What a sad world. I know the nature of the crime...violence and control. But to hurt a child... sad
I'm firmly planted in denial

looking at the possibilities, there's a lot of sense in being overprotective.

There's never been a case of molestation in my family, but we're super protective of them. They've even been enlisted in Tai Kwan Doh (spelling?) and are currently orange belts. We hope they'll be black belts by the time they're 10-12.

It's so sad that we have to be that protective nowadays, but I generally dissagree with people who say things are worse now then ever. They've ALWAYS been fucked up--it's just, now we're doing something about it, and openning our eyes. I can only imagine what it was like to be a child generations ago. Must have been traumatic. And the stigma attached to being abused!
pisses me the fuck off.

don't know. But I feel better, I've seen mums taking much older kids maybe 10-11 in with them - my boys don't feel so bad now. At the mall there is a family room we always go to, I get no complaints then, pram fits in and there are 2 toilets in the room.

i took my friend's kids to the movies this afternoon.
first the five year old boy had to go...
that's a no-brainer - he had to come into the ladies bathroom with me
then the seven year old girl had to go.
she wanted me to go back to the movie - i guess to feel a little grown up
i did let her go into the bathroom by herself but stood around the corner till she came back.
neutral i was rather nervous those last moments before she came back
i kept peeking around the corner making sure there were no men in the hallway
in retrospect i should have just gone into the washroom with her neutral
doveShe couldn't stop crying 'cause she knew he was gone to stay dove

I'd take my two nephews into the bathroom, but then they're only 2 and 5 years old. I do worry about them staying in this house though. Next door there's a paedophile and while of course we're always around when the kids go outside on to the street to play, it'll be more of a worry when they're older and harder to keep track of. Nightmare, really. sad

When we are out we ALWAYS take our kids to the bathroom. My daughter is 5 and I have no qualms in taking her into the men's bathroom. We usually take the handicapped toilet stall and I have all 3 kids in there with me so they can do their business.

My wife read about this one case at an amusement park where a mom walked her boy to the men's room and stood outside the door. A man entered afterwards, and then exited a bit later.

After a long, long time of waiting there she called out for him, and when she got no reply she went inside and found him dead in a stall.

Apparently that man who had entered the bathroom after the boy had gone in covered his mouth, sodomized the kid, then strangled him to death.

Not so long ago a young girl was sexually abused and raped in a ladies toilet at Sainsburys (a supermarket) while her mother shopped.

The guy followed her in and she endured a 10 minute ordeal.

Someone came into the toilets and was in the next loo, and heard the girl crying, but thought not much of it, and didnt do anything about it.

I saw a similar case like this on Oprah or Dr.Phil - the 911 operator who took the call was so traumatised she couldn't leave her house anymore. But in this case it was the grandma outside and the little boy had his throat slit cry

Take her to the Mens room and let her go in the Cubicle while you stay outside the door - Thats what I used to do. No one would say anything cuz obviously you are doing the right thing - At one time we was at an air show and she had to pee, so I took her to the Toilets - The mens toilets where full, so this nice lady made sure the ladies loo's where empty and then stood guard while my step daughter went in there - That was a very nice thing for her to do smile (She had two kids with her also so, I guess she understood my quandry!!)
