Punk music on estrogen. Often acoustic guitar with soft, high male vocals that dwell exessively on the singer's feelings, especially melancholy remembrances of past relationships/mistakes in life.
A form of music that diverged from punk in the '80s, the name "emo" is derived from the emotive style of the lyrics and music. This genre has lately been marketed heavily by the music industry to teenagers with bands such as Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday, and has seen much commercial and mainstream success. The music has also spawned a subculture which conforms to certain conventions in dress such as tight sweatshirts, tight band T-shirts and horn-rim glasses. Adherents profess to exessively melancholy temperments. Males that adhere to the emo subculture are sometimes confused with metrosexuals; indeed the line between the two is somwhat blurred, though both groups claim to be intouch with their emotional side. The ephemeral and hackneyed nature of emo songwriting suggests that its audience will be restricted largely to teenagers. the genre suffers from a lack of credibility outside the aforementioned demographic group, much like current Nu Metal bands.

I love the "trend" of hating it. It's like any other genre of music, there is alot of crap, but there are others that are very good. I think I'm going to put together a mix of it just to prove my point.

That's actually a perfect definition of it and I only wish I thought of it first.

The marketing of so-called emo is simply ridiculous. Emo is NOT a seperate musical subgenre of punk and I wish to GAAAWWWDD these idiot Hot Topic-Gift-Card using suburban teens would get that through their Ritalin-riddled brains. What we now call 'emo' used to be called simply 'punk' or 'alternative.'

Emo only exists at the behest of record companies and music retailers who are trying to make the kids part with their allowance. It's NOT A SEPERATE GENRE!!!!

I wouldn't go so far as to call it punk.....a derivative of it, yes, but it's def. not straight 'punk'. It fits more into 'alternative' I would say.

I like good music regardless of what label they put on it.

ahk.... emo is pop, not punk or alternative it's become way to commerical and watered down to be anything other than pop.
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

Ah...but if you try telling the average Emo kid that, they'd slap you upside the head with their Dashboard Confessional chain wallet. Music genres started to get really jumbled and interbred in the early 90s, once 'alternative' music suddenly became mainstream. I remember Columbia House citing both The Cranberries and Green Day as so-called 'alternative' when both of those bands by that time had enjoyed HUGE mainstream success...and sounded NOTHING like each other.

What we now call 'alternative' we used to call 'college rock' back in the early 90s (at least that's what we called in my high school). Punk music--which emo tries to mimic stylistically-- has become so mainstream that yes indeed, it is now basically just pop music.

Most Emo bands are The New Kids with messy hair and amps.

I would say about 80% of it is cookie cutter crap. There are some very talented bands though. And there are some that I just really dig the lyrics. But the majority is pop crap.
