cool thread! Grew mine for 12 years. Rasta say that locs are like your antenae to God/the univers/nature, etc. I really do believe that. I cut mine about 3 years ago, and its kind of hard to reach that same level of awareness that I had w/my locs. Its possible..just takes more meditation.

I read somewhere that in order to grow real locs you just let your hair fall the way it naturally would instead of twisting and shaping it becuase dreadlocks represent your hair in a natural and unmanipulated state. I don't have locks so i don't know, but i was wondering if that is true.
i have finally stopped chemically treating my hair and it looks and feels so much better. now i have curls all over the place! i'm so happy that i did it.

i have finally stopped chemically treating my hair and it looks and feels so much better. now i have curls all over the place! i'm so happy that i did it. It depends on the look that you want. Light twisting and manipulation helps to shape and train your hair in the form tha you want it. Basically, your hair texture is that of a spiral. What your're doing is "locking" the spirals together. Its a matter of choice, really. You could just let your hair do its own thing and not do any twisting/shaping, but if you're particular about your looks that may not be the move, because you could end up with one big ass dread. not that theres anything wrong with that. I think some people look down on salon locs (what I have, they're very manicured) b/c they're "not authentic". BUT I'm not a "rasta", I loc'd b/c I love the look, it wasn't a spiritual thing for me. Are they super tiny? Like individual braids are? Mine are on the Cassandra Wilson tip they're not too tiny @ all, they're about her size too i always have a hard time describing what interlocking is but you take one lock, and thread the tip of it through it's own root (in different directions as to not separate the root and have a wonky lock) i do however need to chop off the dead ends of relaxed hair that didnt lock once i get them going full gear, i'll prolly peroxide a few of them and then dye them crazy colours every so often

To retwist I usually use Paul Mitchel Molding Mud - it holds *some* without being too stiff & it's not too greasy. Sometimes I'll use a mild gel to retwist but it dries my scalp out if I use it too much. I wish I could find an oil based twist butter that worked well enough to hold I'll use any shampoo that smells good (loving Dove shampoos right now), any conditioner for dry hair, still trying to find spray oils that I like (got a few I'm waiting to try). When I wanna wear it crinkly I use a spray gel (drug store, Herbal Essences I think, super cheap!) & braid it overnight Share your secrets too, dammit Where's Rhonda & Dex? . I was doing my own version of a french roll for years before I loc'd, hairdressers never styled it right (they always made it too neat, I wanted it to be free when it was straight), so locking was the perfect solution for me. I'm not antsy enough to wanna disrupt the locking process - it takes about a year to get them to the point where you can really start to do stuff with them. It's a big decision, be sure girl. CalhounSq said: "interlocking" - does that mean you have sister locks?
Loving mine too (regular salon locs), they're WAY too long & I keep threatening to cut them but I never do But all stages of growth are cool as shit. When they're short they're spikey & funky. The longer it gets the less full it will be, but then you can do more w/ them when they're longer (buns, wavy & wild, straight & sleek, french rolls, etc.). It's one of the best decisions I've ever made But back to the main topic - my locs are easier to care for than any other style I've had, certainly easier than a perm. It used to take me forever to retwist them but now I have it down to 45 minutes if I really hurry And there's always HATS . [Edited 4/18/06 0:40am] I wanted to start locs. I had a mini-fro But time and genetics had, um, other plans. I remember how I would pray -- when I was at that crossroads: I kept praying about finding a loctician in Baltimore -- even consulted one. She looked at me in all my buppiness and said: "Um, you want dreads?" So, like I said, I was praying and all about what to do: "Cut or loc?" And, every time I prayed about it, God would just give me this image of clippers from Wal-Mart. Ask Him for wisdom, He's faithful to give it to you -- even when it's an answer you might not exactly like.
