What's the big deal about Brokeback Mountain?

I finally see this evil film, and guess what? The sex is pretty muted, and really, this music is not really about sex at all, but human emotions and the way a society treats people. It is a really good film with a great warmth. America overhypes this stuff, because of how homophobic we are. Jesus, this country needs to get a life. Love is love, gay or straight.

I have no interest in seeing this film.

Not becuase it's gay, but becuase it's a love story. I hate romances.

A co-worker of mine saw Brokeback Mountain on DVD cause his wife wanted to see it. He said they were both speechless after watching it. He said that the two cowboys also got married and had kids, and continued to make rendevous back at Brokeback Mountain. Curious on other people's thoughts on this.

There is nothing graphic about this film at all. Two dudes kissing is hardly shocking. Even the implied scene was nothing to write home about.

I thought it was good, but like Imago I'm not really a fan of romantic movies.

I have a friend who is currently living the brokeback mountain life, sans rendevouz. He and his wife just had a baby in March.

very sad.

i mean i didn't see the big deal that was made about the movie either. Its a movie that i don't prefer to see anymore anytime soon.

it was just a plain ole movie about two gay lovers who say that they "aren't queer" yet they keep this 20 year rendevous going while they have wives and families.

i see it how i see any couple, cheating on your mate is wrong. They were both cheating on their wives...one (Jake Gyllenhal character) wanted an unrealistic life with his lover (Heath Ledger) for him to leave his life and start a new one with them together. Heath felt this was very unrealistic, had society not been the way it was back then, and the way it still is, he probably would have went for it.

sort of messed up how Jake Gyllenhal ended up though. That was a surprise, but sort of not since he was messing with other guys too when he couldn't get the one he really loved (Heath) to start a life with him.

i dunno...to me it was just a movie. Not the best movie i've seen though.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

sad I feel bad for the wife, esp. if/when she finds out. My wife would cut me 6 ways to Sunday if I did somethin like that.

falloff at your expression!!!

that part in the movie where Heath Ledger's wife was telling him when she figured out what his "fishing trips" were about, and then says "You and Jack Twist..... Jack NASTY!!!" I had to laugh!!! Not at the situation because it was sad, but at how she said it like a little kid.... confused
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

So powerful is his need to feel "normal" that he's willing to live a lie and drag his wife through the best of her years supporting an illusion.

I don't talk to him anymore. The situation is too morbid for me.

and then to JARHEAD...i mean i have the give Jake some props...he's starting to become a very successful versatile actor....

how i know is because i just rented and watched "Brokeback Mountain" on Friday night and then I saw "Jarhead" yesterday. He definitely seemed like two different people. Like when I was watching Jarhead, I didn't even think about his character in Brokeback at all, and vice versa. He's great thumbs up!

I predict that someday he'll be on that list with the greats:

Pacino
DeNiro
Depp
Penn
Brando
Dean
Freeman
McQueen
etc.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I gotta rent Jarhead. Any other films he's been in or just a new actor? I think he is AWESOME!

oh yeah and the only other part in the movie that i liked was when Jack cursed out his father-in-law...i was laughing and sort of relieved at the same time because his character was really weak. When he finally stood up for himself, i was thinking clapping

Just saying it like it is. Wouldn't matter if it was a woman or a man, my wife would be hurlin some cutlery at me. One of her sisters went to jail for shooting her husband cuz she caught him in the act, so I know what can happen.

no.
This is a person willin to go through great lengths of unhappiness to feel normal. This includes no recognition of his true sexual feelings.

It's complicated.

shrug I bet I could relate, actually.

I hope he gains the courage and respect for himself, his kid and his wife to tell her. That kinda thing is like living under a pallet of bricks for him and with an undetected cancer for her. It's a terrible way to exist. disbelief pray

I absolutely hated this film. I can't believe so many gay people especially loved it. To me, it was insulting. I never felt these two characters were really in love with each other, and the disregard they had for their respective families was shameful. I also felt like Jake's character came off as a kind of predator, and that first sex scene was ridiculous.

Hated it.
