designer puppies

I need to vent. I'm sure some of you will understand.

My bitch? The so-called "designer" dog breeds that have gotten so trendy lately. Shnoodles. Pomchis. Labradoodles. Puggles. Yorkipoos. The list goes on. People are willing to shell out literally thousands of dollars for what is essentially a mutt. I saw an ad in the classifieds the other day advertising Puggle puppies at 1500$ a piece. The ad directly beside it was for purebred Pug pups with CKC papers at only 350$. Insanity. I don't have aproblem with mutts -I think they make great pets, in fact. But the sick thing is that most of these people would never think of adopting a dog from a shelter. They don't want a cute, mixed-breed pet; they want an accessory.

Please, people -if you've got your eye on a designer puppy just go down to the local shelter instead. You're likely to find a similar, if not the same kind of mixed breed, at a considerably smaller hit to your wallet.

Try your hand at the test on this page. It proves my point wonderfully:

I saw what I thought was a delightful mongrel at the school gates yesterday and asked his mistress about him, she said he was 1/3 maltese, 2/3 king charles cavalier and cost an arm and a leg.

I cheated when I did it. I used the quality of the photo and the background to guess at whether it was breeder dog (usually a nicer picture) or a shelter dog. But going on the dogs' looks alone? They're nearly identical.

I have 2 dogs ... 1 from the shelter and one purebred from private stock out of scotland

2 cats both from the shelter

i would not trade any of them for any reason

i have been involved in the dog world for 25+ yrs and have had incredible mutts and purebreds

disbelief its just so snobby. everyones concerned with trying to make out theyre better than what they really are, with their fashionable clothes and ideas and whatnot, even disowning their own heritage. Its the sme with the dogs, their just trying to make out their little innocent mutt is some sort of pedigree... WHY?!

I dont get it. I have a mongrel and she's the prettist little dog I've ever seen. We got her from a boy round the corner, who's dog got pregnant from the neighbourhood casanova. Everyone who meets her says how pretty she is, asking if she's this breed or that breed, and she's the most un-snobby dog there could be! Mongrel and proud nod

DO NOT use animals as fashion accessories. Use them for companionship and cuddles. Dogs were NOT made to be carried around in Louis Vuitton bags.

as long as we put down something like 4 million cats and dogs in shelters every single year, it's unconscionable to support a breeder. we need a moratorium on breeding to get those numbers down.

I would like to get the boys a dog once they're a bit older and can take on most of the jobs involved. Not yet though, I have enough on my plate for now.

Surely must agree that pretty dogs are better than smelly dogs that have been thrownaway in sack by master because they are ugly? Who would want to get shelter dog? They stink. It would be like getting garbage from dump!

I share my life with a beautiful little white Scottish Terrier named Winston. He was adopted from a pet rescue agency. He was previously owned by an Atlanta Braves baseball player whose wife bought him because he "matched her decor".....he was basically treated like a piece of furniture. That is animal abuse of a totally different sort.
If you want a dog, by all means support your local animal shelters and rescue agencies.
Her loss is my gain. He is funny, smart, charming, and loveable, and can always bring a smile to my face even on my worst days.

One of the dogs I used to have came from an aunt. Her purebred poodle got loose one night and wound up with a batch of mutt puppies that she thought she couldn't sell. She was just going to send them off to the shelter! We took one off her hands and had a great friend for 18 years. Later on when I'm ready for another dog, it'll be a shelter dog. smile

i used to work for a place where a lot of these kinds of dogs came in. in some cases these owners would overlook more serious health problems in favor of fixing rather superficial things such as doggy breath. they treated their dogs like a pair of designer shoes that could be thrown out at the end of the "season".

People like that bother me. They've got no concept of the responsibility an animal really is. They're like a kid who demands a puppy because her friend has one, then refuse to look after it once they've got it.

Crossbreed, mutt, whatever you want to call them is the same thing. I don't mind them as such but I mind fiercely when people help two breeds mate that never should have on their own, like a dachshund bitch with a german shepherd male. That's just sick and also dangerous for the female. Designer puppies is censored BULLSHIT!

At least if they're gonna do that, you'd think they'd make sure the female was the bigger dog. Then at least it'd only be weird and not dangerous.
