Driver delivers hot load to fire station front door 10:33 a.m. April 7, 2006 JOHN GIBBINS / Union-Tribune Firefighters comb through the smoldering pile of trash dumped at the station. SAN DIEGO – Firefighters are used to going to fires, but this time, the fire came to them. A trash truck driver, alarmed to discover his load was on fire Friday morning, figured the best place to take his problem was to the fire station in Little Italy. And that's exactly what he did. “He saw a fire station and said this is a good place for it – and so he dumped it right there,” said Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque. “The driver just didn't want to take any chance with the fire in the truck, so he dumped the load right in front of the fire station.” The Waste Management driver dumped the load shortly before 9 a.m. in front of Fire Station No. 3, on the corner of State Street and Kalmia Street. The trash was left so close to the building, the fire engine didn't even have to pull out of the station. “They just pulled the hose off the engine and doused it with foam,” Luque said. Trash was strewn over about a quarter of a block. A skip loader was being sent to the site to pull the trash apart to make sure it is entirely extinguished before taking it to the dump, Luque said. “It is probably the shortest incident we've had to respond to, with a response time probably in seconds,” Luque quipped. | |
