Why would anyone paint a stainless steel car?
I rode in one once, it was alright. We put a new engine in for the owner (friend of a friend). It had a Volvo engine, don't remember the specs. I didn't drive it because the owner only let the main mechanic drive.
I think the bodies are OK but the engines were definitely crap.

You can find them cheaper than that guy is asking. I've seen them for $2000.

Does it come with a built-in Flux Capacitor? You'll need that to generate the 1.21 Gigowatts...

With the exception of three gold-plated cars, every De Lorean DMC-12 came from the factory with an unpainted stainless steel body. I wouldn't be surprised if painting a De Lorean lowers the value of the car.

nod The De Lorean used the PRV engine. "PRV" refers to the car manufacturers Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo.

Any De Lorean selling for $2,000 is almost certainly in terrible shape. For one that's not restored, but in good condition, expect to pay about $15,000. If you want one that's undergone a full restoration (completely disassembled and put back together), you can buy one here for $42,500.

IMHO they're not bad cars. Their performance isn't anything special, but the last ones were made in late 1982 (sold as 1983 models) -- over 23 years ago -- and today about 2/3 of them are still on the road. There's one that's usually parked on the street near my previous residence.

Also, getting parts for them is much less difficult than you'd expect. When the De Lorean Motor Company went out of business, they had a huge supply of replacement parts, which is now in the hands of a Texas-based company. I believe the only part that's hard to get is the left front fender.

Well, the auction is over... it sold for $7,600. However, I didn't read the description before... I missed the following:

  • It doesn't run. At least for me, that's a deal-breaker.
  • It sat in a driveway for 11 years. If you're not going to drive a car for an extended period of time, there are some things that should be done first, and I'll bet they weren't done here.
  • "The car was painted red due to damage to the right rear quarter panel near the lower wheel well." Okay, let me get this straight. The car suffered some body damage, and the "repair" was trying to hide it with paint? omg Now that's a pretty good sign that at some point, this car had a clueless owner who probably didn't take very good care of it.
