Growing Old - An Insight

We may think growing old is a bad thing, something we cannot avoid, for sure

Some of us may welcome retirement, others may fear each year creeping towards us

The majority of us are still very young.. and with Princes music and sprir, he keeps us young, as does Prince.Org and our friends here and all around us.

But:

Nature can be cruel, and uncontrollable

My Grandad is my hero - always has been always will be

He is poorly - he is 91 years old, and suffering

His physical health is good - for a 91 year old, and mental health is deteriorating

It is affecting the whole family.

He was on some drugs and put into hospital, where he wouldnt walk, talk, or interact, and 2 years ago we feared the worst.

Thankfully it was only the drugs, and if the doctor hadnt tried other drugs he would have been in the same vegetative state, or not, so to speak

But they took him off those drugs, tried others and we found that he got better.. was willing to walk, talk, had an interest in the world, and began to read newspapers and interact with people and things around him again.

He went to a home, for a holiday and the carers there were so brilliant, they wouldnt let him get away with anything - so they forced him to walk, eat and do many things and before long I had my Grandad back.

He also suffers from Othello's Syndrome. I want to bring this to light. Its where a partner is jealous of their spouse, a paranoid, delusional jealousy that can bring hurt to their loved ones and family. My Grandma is housebound with arthritis, and has loved and been married to my Grandad for 61 years now.
In recent years he has called it a sham and accused my Grandma of having affairs etc etc, even though she cannot and has not left the house.

It is sad, and brings my Grandmother to tears, who so loves her husband but has to face that fact that it is not him saying these things, but his ILLNESS!

Again, it brings sorrow to the family.
He is paranoid about everything and where he asks us for advice and welcomes it, the very next day can be accusing us of taking his money and wants to send us to court.

The next day is A. OK.

It has my mother and Aunt in tears, my father in despair. They want and try to help, only for it to be thrown back in their faces. But this is not my Grandad, my Hero, it is the illness.

He had set up trust funds for all his children and grandchildren, now he is accusing us of stealing his money.

All the money we have, we would give to make him better.

It is so sad, beyond believe, such a strong courageous, proud man, who has fought in the war, a real hero, a role model, an entrepreneur, the kind of man that you would never find today.

This thread is for my Grandad.

He is MY Grandad and I am proud of him. smile

I hate the illness, but it is to bring awareness of how cruel fate can be dealt amongst us.

Your Grandad sounds like a wonderful man Red, its awful when illnesses like that affect people we love. My cousin, who is like my big sister, is paranoid schizophrenic, shes only 31. If she takes her medication she's ok, but she gets lax and decides she doesnt need her medication anymore, and that theres nothing wrong with her. She gets paranoid of everything and everyone, and she can be very dangerous if you're in her line of fire. Not that theyre the same, its just horrible when it's something in the mind thats ill, it must be so hard for your Grandmother hug
