It was kind of sad..the look on his face when he was eating
He was probably thinking "Sigh,Im gonna have to leave when I finish this bread...chew slowly..very slowly...yum yum gulp! slower dammit! D'oh Im finished"
"Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

WillyWonka

I'm no John Lennon authority, though I am a fan and have read books about him and his life, and my thoughts on Lennon's personality and this particular incident are that A) John loved being famous but didn't really like being idolized as though he were a diety -- in fact, sometimes I think he actually felt kind of contemptuous of fawny fans and their slobbery devotion to him; and B) as far as this incident with the homeless fan goes, I think John's treatment of him was much more sincere and humane, and even humble, than standing there playing up his "celebrity/icon/"I'M A STAR" image and sucking up the adulation; John seemed to genuinely care that this man was living his life essentially worshipping (as John said) just "a guy" who happened to create music for a living. I truly think John wanted to make that homeless man realize that fact and move on and put his energies towards something that might improve his OWN life.

John had his flaws and wasn't always the perfect human being, but I think he truly cared about his fans as people and was touched by them and he tried, in his own way, to help this homeless man realize that glorifying John and holding him up as some kind of god wasn't healthy.

Not to mention what an awesome, terrible responsibility that kind of adulation would cause someone like John to feel.

john lennon could be very vicious to fans from what I have gleaned about his acidic condescending confrontational sense of humor.
