Going on holiday by oneself Is it a good idea to have a break somewhere but just by yourself? Have you ever done it? How did it go? Can anyone recommend anywhere to go?

I do it all the time in my imagination. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Ex-Moderator | A few years ago I went to San Francisco by myself. I went for an old friend's wedding, so I did have a few not-so-lonely activities, but I made a long weekend out of it and spent the majority of my time on my own. I adored it. It's one of my favorite cities and it's so nice to go out exploring on your own. |

Where would you go, JD? I think a solo trip to somewhere beautiful and culturally important could be really healthy for the soul. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

That's what I was thinking of. Possibly Prague or Vienna as I've never been there before.

Now THAT would be a great solo trip. I love that city. Being a bum there sounds more attractive than living in a suburb here in Cleveland. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I never have but I want to. Sometimes travelling with someone else is good because you get to share it with someone, also the security factor. But it depends on what youre planning to do. Personally I'd like to travel far and wide, on my own timetable and my own itinerary, and im just so stubborn that it would make sense to go alone! Plus its a very important thing to me, and the sort of thing I'd like to share with just me.
This one of your "get us talking" threads JD or are you going away somewhere?? You should!!

This one of your "get us talking" threads JD or are you going away somewhere?? You should!! Without wishing to be grumpy or selfish, I start threads on here because nobody else does unless it's another laborious one about a few certain Orgers. This thread is genuine as I'm wanting to get away in the next couple of months or so. I really wanted to go to the Reading Festival or perhaps another music festival depending on me getting my hands on a ticket. The thing is, I don't think I could find anyone to go with me so that's why I'm planning a trip on my own.

I went to Paris last year by myself. I had friends that were there at the same time, thoguh, that I could meet for dinner. It was fabulous....do what you want to do, when you want to.....go for it! I highly recommend it for soul cleansing.... "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive."

This place would die if it werent for your threads! I think you should just bite the bullet and go on your own if you cant find someone Youll have a great time, and you only live once! As for the festivals, you'll probably get separated from your friends anyway and youll easily make more!

I might have a look at going to another.

Seriously though, if you come to Edinburgh in August, the place is jumping. The whole citys taken over by a months long festival of everything you could dream of, music, theatre, comedy, street stuff, parades, concerts, and the population about doubles so theres just a great atmosphere. And It'd be cheap too, seeing as you dont have to go far!

I'm thinking of going to the Cannes Film Festival in May - just for a day or two.

I once went to a club med by myself...I didn't have a good time. Perhaps it was the club (st lucia)..perhaps it was me. It was harder to meet people by myself as opposed to hanging with a friend and talking to other people. Just my experience

DO IT JD!!!!!
My trip to London was a great opportunity for me. I mean I've always wanted to go and the Invasion was a great reason to go but I really needed to get away, far away. I spent about 5 days alone just walking around and actually taking time to just sit and be still. I don't do that very much here at home. I went travelling around Europe by train (Interrailling) on my own when I was 19-20
It was a great experience, but I did get hassled alot, and sleeping in a train station on your own isnt great, esp when the guard came at 5.30am with a stick and prodded you to wake up. I would then wash my smalls in the loos, and walk down to the beach, spread them out on a towel, and while I was waiting for them to dry, would swim in the sea nekkid [Edited 4/6/06 10:47am]
