Beats any iPod hands down. I too go with Creative Labs "Zen" MP3 player. I use the type with the hard drive. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.

So that's fairly expensive when the thing is pretty expensive to begin with. Why bother with getting Apple just for the brand (like people used to by Nike for the same reason) when there are better players out there? iPod only plays 128kbps mp3... other players like the Zen have much better quality sound (up to CD quality), video, etc and are cheaper! You're just paying for the name with Apple.

You're just paying for the name with Apple. I like several non-Apple mp3 players (i own a rio) and I love the zen. As for the iPod, the 128kbps is a nonissue since a higher bit rate makes zero difference given the headphones I use. Headphones that can take advantage of a higher bit rate cannot be adequately powered by any portable mp3 alone. Even on my home stereo, 128 is fine, although I almost always listen to vinyl or cd at home. I will happily pay more for a Apple product. They think about consumers when they design and their hardware and software is more intuitive than other brands. I use a mac powerbook and the ipod works perfectly with it. Also, there are far more third-party aftermarket products for the ipod than for the zen. There are lots of reasons to choose the iPod over other devices. Even if the replacement battery only lasts a year (my first lasted two), at $20 it comes to less than six cents a day. I can swing it. (IMO) i love that i can convert my own home videos and download them to it. and i'm going to figure out what i need to do to rip my dvd movies to it too. (i read about how to do it somewhere, but haven't had the chance to look into it further) i'm listening to it right now. man, i love my ipod.

I'm sorry but that's plainly untrue and has never applied to any iPod that I know of... iPods play any mp3 or mp4 bitrate you throw at them up to 320kbps, and also support a lossless audio format for perfect playback. My 30GB is filled with 320kbps and lossless files.

I've gone with the other tech/music monolith - or at least my wife did when she bought it for me...
yeah it might be little...but it's loud. Weirdy proprietry software and file format was a bit annoying to start with, but the atrac format files take up hardly any space at all compared to mp3 (and still get good bitrate). All those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand...

I bought the 1 gig model for my son. If you upgrade your sonicstage to the current version, it's a breeze. No atrac conversion necessary. Orgnote me and I'll send you a link to the updated software.
