Jeremiah Jeremiah - by Dan
Jeremiah was a well behaved but unremarkable kid. Neither ugly nor striking in appearance, neither dumb nor gifted in class, neither boastful nor shy, his days in school and church were spent blending in with the other high school kids. Susan Colato was a nurse who worked shift work to help make ends meet for the family, while her husband, George , worked running cable for the phone company to put food on the table for Jeremiah and his brothers and sisters. He had two siblings, a seven year old sister and a 12 year old brother, Karen and William. Often, at night when George was too exhausted from a long days work, and Susan was working shift, Jeremiah would read from a vast library books in his kid sister’s bedroom out loud to her—her favorite book was Where the Wild Things are . This ritual would take place nightly and Karen couldn’t sleep unless she was read a story. Often, we all knew she wasn’t much paying attention to the plot or storyline—she simply liked the attention. And she adored her older brother. It was a happy family. An ordinary family. A simple family. There was no motive. In the end the investigation revealed that Jeremiah tied each of his family members up one by one with handcuffs that he had gotten from a novelty store. Before each one had died, he subjected them to his father’s hand-drills, pliers, crowbars, and saran wrap to both suffocate and silence the loudest ones. Once totally spent, he left them there to bloat and rot, washed up, and slipped away with what little money he was able to save up. You see, Jeremiah didn’t consider what he did necessarily evil. It was in him to do this. He likened it to a snake killing a rat for food. The snake simply has no morale decision in that process—it must kill the rat to exist. And in order for Jeremiah to fulfill his role in the universe, he had to do these things. The world was so clear to him now. . [Edited 4/4/06 19:36pm] | |
