tom baker was my favorite...i guess that's a popular choice, though. when i was a kid, i used to get marvel premiere comics starring him as doctor who, and i always wanted to see the show but never had the chance.

I agree with Baker. I also liked Paul McGann's Doctor, but unfortunately the TV movie didn't go anywhere with him. confused

Such a great series. It's a little Buffy-ish, but still a lot of fun. The episode about the killer gas masks in WWII was crreeeeepy. It's a shame there's already a new doctor, cuz I really liked this guy.

I used to occasionally watch the old Dr. Who series on PBS I believe.

Do you remember a sci-fi series called...

...The Tripods?

I hear there's a movie adaptation slated for 2007.

Tom Baker does the commentary for Little Britain, it's very funny.

This is great, but I eventually got fed up with the wait (over a year) and watched the series via "alternative" methods. The new series really does capture the essence of Who without too many blunders, though I personally would have done a lot of things different, starting with locking Eccleston (sp?) into a three or four year contract...

"War of the Worlds"? That was all about the Tripods, wasn't it? (the new one, that is)

BBC should have never gotten an American company involved. Paul McGann does do voice work for some of the Big Finish audio adventures of Dr. Who, I highly recommend checking this out if you like the good Doctor and wish for more...

nod I've just started getting those from the local library in the last few weeks and listening to them while at work. I'm very much enjoying the stories with him in the role!

...and "Shada" was an excellent story. thumbs up!

Yes, you could look at it that way.

The Tripods was a BBC series based on books written by John Christopher.

It's been said that the books were an attempt to flesh out the War of the Worlds alternate ending.

biggrin Have ya seen it? If not, you'll definitely see what I mean. The way they handle Rose's story arc in this (regular English teen becomes the savior of the universe) feels a lot like Buffy. The creator of this series even said so somewhere. Don't get me wrong. I liked Buffy (at least the first couple of season), but this series is at its weakest when Rose is having to deal with her life back in Cardiff.

The new one's even hotter if you like your men skinny and geeky-looking.

You have got to watch this show. It's silly, camp, preposterous, cheap, flimsy... But at the same time it's completely involving and entertaining. It made me cry on more than one occasion.

The episode where Rose asks the Doctor to go back in time, to the day her father died and rescues him had me blubbing for about an hour.

I also got into a bit of a "communication" with Rob Shearman, the bloke whom wrote the third episode of the series. I sent him a CD with a copy of a radio show on that he'd missed and I never heard from him again. No "thanks" or anything!!!
