well, okay...
was awesoem to see something in studio 54, the building is legendary. kept making jokes the way in. "liza overdosed on THOSE stairs!" "drew became a 10 year old coke fiend in that corner", ect... never been a huge fan of the show, and while the prouction itself was pretty good, i am still not a huge fan. i do like the depressing, dark, and twisted nature of it. very german. alan cumming was very good, jim dale was INCREDIBLE (mark my words- he will win the tony), nellie mckay seemed a wee bit out of her element but was good, and ana gasteyer was a wee bit dissappointing, but good. cyndi lauper - the woman has BIG potential for broadway. she STOLE the show. her acting is only so-so, but servicable. her voice live is S T U N N I N G. she was almost cast as the female lead in the sweeney todd revival that opened a month or so ago, but the producers didn't think she could handle it and cast patti lupone instead - BIG MISTAKE. in her broadway debut, she tore the house down, and has great stage presence, and would have been a natural choice for mrs. lovett in sweeney todd. too bad her role is a smaller one in this. i am willing to bet that once lupone's contract expires, the sweeney producers will lure her over to replace patti. the show itself was kinda cool... like a B or B+. they made macheath (cumming) openly bi-sexual, something that has always been hinted at in the original show. the character is very much about sex as a weapon, so it really made sense. the design was very grimy and dirty and sexual. costumed by isaac mizrahi, very cool. guess who else is in the cast - carlos leon, who madonna fans will recall is lourdes's dad. wondered if lourdes and maddy have been to see the show. they made lucy a man in drag, which was quite funny, since the character is pretending to be pregnant, and further served the pansexuality of macheath. the actor playing lucy was I N C R E D I B L E. may get a tony nom, but probably not a win. at intemission, was heading back to my seat, and ran right into wallace shawn, who wrote the adaptation, and will be better known to most of you as this guy from princess bride:
and the voice of the dinosaur in the 'toy story" movies. told him i am a big fan of "my dinner with andre" which he wrote, and that i liked the adaptation he had done with this. asked how much of the lyrics he had changed, ect. was very very nice, shook my hand. when 2nd act started, he plopped down in front of me in an empty chair, and watched the show. over all, pretty good. it's still in previews, which means stuff is still be changed and re-written before the official opening, when it gets locked in and doesn't change. will probably go see it when it opens.
