House of Leaves is, indeed, a book by Mark Z Danielewski. His sister is recording artist Poe (you probably remember from her mid-90s hit "Angry Johnny"). Around the same time that Mark released his book, Poe released the CD Haunted, which touched on many of the same themes as the book (but also was intended to stand on its own, as it is really more about her father dying and coming to terms with her grief). The album makes numerous references to HoL.

Now this has made my day...

Poe is definitely an outstanding artist, I love her lyrics and songs. I've been recently introduced to Danielewski's stuff as well. "House of Leaves" sounds like da masterpiece!

The book is truly astounding, and not just because of the obvious ways in which it lends itself to cult status.

His writing is remarkable.

For example, chapter 5 on echoes...chapter 9 on labyrinths and the minotaur. The chapter (I forget which one) on brothers; the Pelican poems at the end and, of course The Whalestoe Letters, which have been published separately (and from what I understand in slightly different form).

Stunning set pieces.
