UPDATE!!!!!!Special baby--animal lovers we need you!!UPDATE!!!!!!! Here is an update on Sweet Pea:
31 March 06 - Latest news on Sweet Pea..... She went for her first walk on her latest home-built cart. They lowered the height of the first prototype a couple of inches so she is at a more natural angle and she was so insistent on going out with her buddy for a walk that they decided to try it out. She did great! Walking down the sidewalk, they went about half a block and back and then she saw a cat! Dog instincts kicked in regardless of being on a cart and off she ran chasing the indignant cat. This is one amazing dog. Her foster family have also placed Sweet Pea's food bowl on a low ledge so she can eat without having to roll in her kibble. I got this in my email this morning, this is sweet pea, she is in San Antonio. We found Sweet Pea (photos attached) this weekend in an abandoned apartment along with 2 cats. They were all infested with fleas and very hungry and thirsty but they have bounced back with some good meals and TLC. Sweet Pea has some challenges ahead. She was born with no front legs but she doesn't seem to know that she is handicapped. She is a typical puppy with the sweetest temperament and we feel that she has the aptitude and determination (with some human help, of course) to lead a happy, active life. We think she is a chihuahua/terrier mix and we will know more after tomorrow's vet visit about her age and physical condition. We have looked on the websites for suitable carts that might help her mobility and have found these 2 possibilities. http://www.k9carts.com/cart.html http://www.eddieswheels.c...carts.html Does anyone have any experience of this kind of disability in dogs or perhaps you know of another manufacturer of carts who we can contact for information? Please let me know if you have any help or advice. You have received this email because you are on my list of compassionate, animal-friendly people. From time to time, details are sent out via email of animals looking for permanent or foster homes, lost pets to keep a lookout for, etc. However, if you would rather not receive emails of this sort in the future, please accept my apologies and just send a reply asking to be removed from the list. I am restraining myself from running down there and getting her! but I really don't have time for all the special needs she has, PLUS with my big boy, the cat, the kids, hubby and my mom my plate is pretty full. Hopefully someone will see this and the email and she will find a great forever home. unfortunately, my apartment in ny would make it difficult for her. every room has doorjams that are above the level of the floor. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

you know i was reading about them looking for a cart for her, but I have only seen carts for dogs that are missing back legs, I wonder how a cart for her would work, she's have to push instead of pull? so if she's pushing, a high door stop wouldn't be so hard would it?

most of their power is in their hind legs... i think a doggie like her could live quite a potentially rich life.
hmm, I'm thinking of a roller skate cut in two, the two sides welded next to each other... maybe just two wheels at first for a puppy...

I'm still looking for a deaf doggy / bunny / cat for myself though. I'm not kidding - I think a deaf pet is the only type that would survive inside my household, and if somebody doesn't want to keep theirs I'd be glad to take it for myself.

not sure how big she'll get, I checked the website and there's no mention of the size of terrier they think she's mixed with, the chihuaua at the biggest is what 10 lbs? also they don't fit them for the carts until they are 8 months old, that way the expense is only incurred once. they are fitting her with a harness to protect her chest, I am guessing she's getting around very well We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.
