CALGARY, Alberta - Olympic silver medalist Shani Davis set a world record in the men's 1,500 meters Sunday at the ISU world all-around speedskating championships. Davis finished in 1 minute, 42.68 seconds, breaking the mark of 1:42.78 set in 2005 by U.S. teammate and rival Chad Hedrick, with whom Davis feuded publicly at the Turin Games.

Hedrick, paired with Davis in Sunday's race, finished second in 1:42.85. Canada's Denny Morrison was third in 1:42.97.
Dutch skater Sven Kramer later broke Hedrick's world record in the 10,000 meters. Kramer finished in 12 minutes, 51.60 seconds, cutting more than four seconds off Hedrick's mark set last November in Salt Lake City.
Davis, who also took the 500 race on Saturday, won the overall men's title for the second straight year. Italy's Enrico Fabris was second, and Kramer finished third.

"To me, this is bigger than the Olympics," said Davis, showing off his overall gold medal. "This medal is prestigious. Not only do you have to skate 500 meters, but you have to skate 10,000, you have to skate a 1,500 and a 5,000 and you only have two days to do it."

Hedrick was disqualified from Sunday's 4,000-meter race after failing to change lanes. He shrugged off the disappointment, calling it a mental error.
"It's better it happened now than at the Olympics, which we train for our whole lives," Hedrick said. "You can say I got three medals at the Olympics, but it's been a really tough year for me and this just tops it off."

whoa....I had forgetten about them already You gotta give Hedrick credit though.....the man didn't even start skating on ice until three years ago. People train their whole lives for what he accomplished in only a few years.
