BucketOfBouncyBalls said: SeattleInvasion said: Yeah, dental disease is the most likely thing. And the most correctable thing (though it can be expensive). There are other diseases that will cause those symptoms, though, either due to oral ulceration, or due to nausea (with the bad breath coming from the underlying disease. . . here I'm thinking of renal failure). Hopefully/probably it's the teeth. Oral ulceration....you hit the nail on the head. Eh. That's too bad. It can be a pain to treat, depending on the cause. The good news is, you're a good caretaker who took the problem seriously. Some people ignore that kind of stuff for months. You have a lucky kitty. update all
Well...the drs tested and tested and nothing they have no feline leukemia or infections...Now I have five cats and all five cats are sick...Swollen upper lip oral ulcerations and some drooling and they spend most of their time sleeping. I had to go back with the baby because his nose was stuffy and i figured he had a URI well..no..The dr tested him and again....nothing. All tests negatives and no signs of infection. She told me that it must be something "viral" and that we have an outbreak of it among the cats. She said it could be feline herpes or this c word...but....funny thiing is....i looked up both viruses and both...only have oral ulcerations and sleeping a lot as symptoms and thats the only tihng they have! The other symptoms such as really bad conjugtivitis (sp?) and things in their eyes is not even a sign in our cats. IT seems like they have had a really bad food allergy. You know when you eat peanuts or sometihng ur allergic too and ur lips swells? Thats how my cats look. They are on medication and mimi..the first kitty is doing a lot better. I dont think its any of the things the dr said...I hope they get better soon but for now they are sleeping. | |

Different strains can have different collections of symptoms (think about how sometimes you get a cold and it's more sore-throat-and-achy, where other times it's more snotty). We vaccinate for that, though, so it's not that common anymore. Anyway, it's almost certainly viral. Poor kitties! Seattle Org Invasion July 28th-30th http://www.prince.org/msg/2/177514

I'm not a vet, but I worked for several years as a tech. Are their noses stuffy? If so, you can put them in the bathroom and run the shower super hot in there for a while. The steam will help. Doing warm, wet washcloth compresses on gunky faces helps too. And if the area under the nose is raw and the vet didn't give you anything, a dab of "neosporin plus pain" (triple antibiotic with lidocaine, or something much like lidocaine) will help keep the kitty comfy. It's ok if a litte of it gets licked off. Make sure they keep eating at least a little, and they'll be ok. Seattle Org Invasion July 28th-30th http://www.prince.org/msg/2/177514
