I went one time with six of my friends in the truck of my 72 Maverick. The cold part was when the person at the ticket window asked me where was my boyfriend. I was pissed for some strange reason when they asked me that question. Even though, my honey was in the trunk, I took it as though he thought I could not get a man or something. I laugh about it now.

There is a drive in theatre that is still in operations in Riverside, California. I am hoping that I will be able to go with someone soon to re-kindle those good old times. I miss courting and being chased like I was in high school. That was so much fun.

it's like 21.00 bucks a carload these days (2 movies) and you no longer need those speaker things in your window. Now you just tune your car radio to a channel like 88.9 or something and ta-da the audio plays through your car speakers biggrin

I absolutely love drive-in theaters. There's something special about the whole experience -- a part mix of innocence, part nostalgia, part social interaction, and then just the whole aspect of relaxing in your car and watching other people, other cars, etc.

My first date with my first love was at a drive-in. heart

Anybody here remember JoeBob Briggs? He's great. He's a drive-in aficionado. He's got a entire section of his site dedicated to driveins, drive-in movies, and the drive-in movie experience.

the first and last drive i went to was in upstate new york to see the second installment of the matrix trilogy. it was awesome. a bunch of us went in one of my friend's van and we opened the trunk and turned the seats around and watched the movie that way. We brought our own food and made a night of it. i would go to another one but i haven't heard of one since.

the very last one that existed in the des moines area was the S.E. 14th drive-in, and my folks and i went there a couple times since it was the closest movie theater to our house. i remember one time when i was about 10 or so, we all piled up in our old lemon-yellow pinto station wagon with a big bag of popcorn that my dad popped at home (he'd be damned to buy the expensive-assed stuff at the drive-in lol). we watched that cruddy film roadhouse...i fell asleep halfway through it. zzz

of course, it's gone now. they got rid of the drive-in and there's a lowe's on the land where it used to be. it sucks, cuz it was a cool place.

At Age 7, my parents took us to "Food of the Gods" and "Warriors". There were a few others I can't recall. But I do remember falling asleep usually during the 2nd show. I remember it being a big production too...getting blankets and pillows. Making the mirror vertical so those in the back seat could see.

I miss them.

I love drive-ins.

One time, shamefully, I went with my best male friend at the time. We brough beers, and I drank to many. I drove home that night. I don't know how it is I got home, only by the grace of god. I was only 17. I don't drink and drive no more. Drinking and driving is bad, so don't bring beers to a drive in.

Here in Phoenix Arizona, we still have drive-ins. I have been meaning on taking my wife to the show. Maybe I should go.

Raised in Drive In playgrounds and the list of 70's movies is too long to recite. It's sad to know they're time is done in the digital age. Memories to make one feel old with.

I read in the last year or so that drive-ins are currently making somewhat of a comeback. I hope they do, although it's most likely the interest is just a faddy nostalgia thing that won't catch on or last long.

Yes, you should take your wife to the drive-in some night. nod It's like the perfect date destination. smile

When I lived in Phoenix, the one thing I remember like it was yesterday was coming home from the driv in at like 3 AM and the DJ on the radio is like "it's 110 degrees right now" and I just thought, "at 3 AM?" but it was just the desert radiating the heat of the day.

Oh yeah, drive ins, "Tommy" has to be one of my most memorable movies at the drive in, or "Jesus Christ Superstar"

I don't really think of any "return" of a drive in as a faddy nostalgia type thing. Drive-In theaters are so much more then a retro passtime. I don't doubt that drive in theaters wouldn't be more prevlenate if it wasn't for the bottom line of the small business world. Unfortunally, weather plays a big factor when it comes to theaters outside. This takes a big bite out of the bottom line for most States. Our State however has 330 days of sunshine and dry weather, and although in the summertime it is 110 at night, most of the year it is perfect drive in theater weather.

sometimes I like to think I will talk to the owner of such a drive in theater and work out a deal where he would play purple rain and another prince movie. I would then pay for seats I could not sell or something like that. I would love to post such a date on a message board like this and see what would come of it. I might also advertise in the paper. I think something like that could be alot of fun.

You're absolutely right on both counts. The very last drive-in theater in my hometown spluttered along for as long as possible until the owner said he just couldn't afford to keep it open anymore. He'd owned the place for years and years and was so sad to finally have to close it down. sad But sadly less people were attending the drivein, and the ones that were were causing huge problems with drinking and drugs.

And yep, weather sure is a factor. Up here where I am there are pretty few months out of the year where going to a drive-in movie is feasible.

We have two drive-ins here, one has two screens biggrin. We try to go several times over the summer. It's a cheap night out, just put the kids in their jammies and they usually are asleep before the second movie.

When I lived in Canada, they used to have x-rated nights at the drive-in near the res. We knew a spot on the road next to the drive-in where we could see everything and get the sound on our radio. That was a really good time. smile

We were too young too, but there was a dirt road off to the side that had just enough clearance through the trees for us to have a good view of the screen. There was very little traffic on that road, we were out in the boonies north of Toronto.Alas, that drive in is gone now, sad
