(AP) Owatonna, Minn. A teenager has been sentenced to spend a month in jail and fined $1,000 for stealing crossing guard patrol flags from elementary school students.

Joshua Douglas Watkins, 19, of Owatonna, Minn., was sentenced to a year in jail Monday after pleading guilty in September to one count of making terroristic threats, the Owatonna People's Press reported.

All but 30 days of his sentence was stayed, however, pending his successful completion of up to five years of probation. He was also fined $3,000, of which $2,000 was stayed.

According to the criminal complaint, Watkins and three other teenagers were accused of snatching patrol flags in October 2004 from McKinley Elementary School students as young as 10 years old. Witnesses told police that Watkins, who was a passenger in a vehicle with the others, shouted "I'm going to kill you; I have a gun" at the children.
