Anyone who has driven from LA to Vegas knows this place..

Zzyzx, California
is a settlement in San Bernardino County, California, formerly the site of the Zzyzx Mineral Springs and Health Spa and now the site of the Desert Studies Center. The area is also the location of Lake Tunedae, one of the refuge habitats of the endangered Mohave tui chub.

Zzyzx Road is a 4.5 mile/7.2 km long, part paved and part dirt, rural collector road in the Mojave Desert. It runs from Interstate 15 generally south to the Zzyzx settlement.

The name Zzyzx, pronounced /ˈzaɪˌzɪks/ (rhyming with "Isaac's", not "physics"), was given to the area in 1944 by Curtis Howe Springer, claiming it to be the last word in the English language. whofarted

I'm about to reveal something that I don't like to discuss...the name of my home town....the town with the longest single name in Iowa...

Correctionville boxed

The sign greatly over elaborates the recreational options of the town. lol

And before you ask, no, there's no prison there (just a High School). The reason behind the name can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ille,_Iowa

I know--you're from Des Moines, right? (I remember you mentioning it in some other threads.) I did my undergrad at Drake. C'ville (not to be confused with Centerville or Mechanicsville wink) is about 45 minutes east of Sioux City on Highway 20. It's BORING AS HELL, I couldn't wait to leave, and I only go back for xmas. And when people ask where I grew up I just say, northwestern Iowa 'cause I try to avoid bring up "Correctionville" at all costs. lol

oh, okay...so basically it's one of those absolute boonie towns that are out there. and yeah, i'd be totally willing to get the hell outta there too, if i were from there. that welcome sign just screams "false advertising". jog down our main street...and to somewhere else!

the closest i've ever been to living an iowan boonie life is when i lived in denison for 7 months when i was in job corps. man, that place was so dead. lol

falloff Exactly. They think "jog down our main street" is a clever play on the fact there is a jog in the main street. There was also a gym for awhile that was called "The Jog Fitness Center" disbelief LAME. I didn't even live in town--I was stuck on a farm 3 miles from town. UGH.

I've driven through Denison many times on my way to DsM. Denison is HUGE compared to C'ville (which has a population 851, no stoplights or movie theaters or anything)! Now I'm in New York and I don't miss Iowa one damn bit. It's not my style...I knew from a very young age that I didn't belong there. biggrin
