ATTN Mac Experts: What computer to buy?

I NEED a new computer desperately - and at home, I am a Mac person - (I PC at work)

My typing needs:

Word = for writing
Internet = e-mail and the Org biggrin
DVD/CD -RW = cuz I like to share compilations (and bootlegs) giggle
Wireless port = so I can sit at my local coffee shop (NOT Starbucks) and surf

OK, I was going to get a iBook 14" with all of thee above... but the NEW MacBooks with Intel chip dual processors are coming in any minute!
(review):

http://www.nytimes.com/20...ref=slogin

These are a little more expensive... and Word doesn't run well on them... yet! But should I take the plunge, even with this NEW model which seems a tad buggy - as all first-generation models can be?

I NEED ADVICE fit

typos edit - as usual

My Seth says that you don't seem to need a high-performance computer from the applications listed. A current iBook would be fine or you could even wait for the new ones to come out and drop the price of the current ones.

The more I have, for both are infinite." ~Juliet

Thanks to you and Seth - this advice seems to be the consensus from those I've polled. My needs are pretty simple - I guess I'm just afraid of buying a baby dinosaur that will mature faster than I want it to. shrug

LOL! Thanks, everyone!

Yeah - most peeps seem to think it's not the bestest idea to go for a fist-generation model of something "new"... and that I should wait wait till they get "perfected" biggrin

In the meantime, I think I'll be able to pick up a newer iBook for cheap to hold me over till then... or maybe even a Mini... hmmm

Yeah, I'm a mac person, what can I say? shrug

yeah an 14inch ibook would be sufficient enough. all i have is a 12 inch and i have microsoft office and adobe cs2 and everything works fine. my dream move up to a mac pro with intel when i'm able to pull in more money drool by that time those may have improved. i love apple love

Actually, that should read: "You don't want to buy anything that runs Windows XP." wink

Any G4 iBook should do you just fine for word and internet, look around used if you need a bargain. Additionally, the forthcoming MacBook will likely run Word "faster" then any current model - even under emulation - but how fast can you really type? Additionally, in your position, I'd even look at the prices of used 12" PowerBooks...

Myself, I've hardly had ANY issues with XP. The only problems I've had was dealing with poorly coded software on a game I have. Otherwise my three systems have been stable and rock solid.

Plus it's a bit cheaper buying upgrade parts when there are so much more competing companies to choose from. Oh, then there's the software that's PC compatible but not Mac compatible....

Well, most have already chimed in.

I bought a 14" iBook in 2002 (same year I switched) and I STILL have it. It's in great working order and I'm on it right now. smile I recommend these machines as a great buy.

BUT, at the same time Mac is constantly keeping it moving machinewise and the new MacBooks look loverly. If I were buying a new computer, I'd go with a MacBook or a Powerbook over the iBook -- simply because I'm a hardcore computer user nowadays. I'm more and more saavy each year. The iBooks are great, but their like the Honda Accord to the MacBooks & Powerbooks (which are like the BMWs and Jaguars of the MacWorld).

Hope these similies helped. lol

I'm so proud. touched

biggrin

I love my iBook, and yeah, there is an argument to be made for letting the MacBooks come out, buying an iBook, and then upgrading in a couple of years when the prices come down.

A fag like Steve Jobs, that's who.

And by "fag", I mean "muthafuckin' genius who rules all galaxies", of course.

What, I should use that peice of shit OS 'cause it's called Windows? Like that's some genius name? I mean, it sorta makes sense. . . as in, "use our product and you'll be glad that your office has windows to gaze out of as you're waiting for your computer to reboot again." So, there is that.

Just watch. He'll get you in time. A year from now you'll be posting about your shiny new macbook. evillol
