As I type my mum is having an operation

It is only day surgery, but keep her in your thoughts!

She developed a 3cm x 5cm cyst in her jawbone without symptoms excepts a mild ache on one side. Apparently if she had knocked her jaw even softly it could've been broken eek it was very lucky it was discovered at a routine dental checkup. And my parents went a week worrying it was some kind of tumour before the oral surgeon had it x-rayed.

She turned 60 yesterday.

pray I am praying she has no complications and a speedy recovery. heart

It's terrible when those closest to us have to go through surgery! Even when it's just a standard procedure it still feels very scary. You seemed fairly calm when you told me about this though, so that made me think you've been reassured by the doctors that everything will be fine. Is that correct?

Either way I'm going to keep your mom in my thoughts! nod

I know. I am so busy going around tied up in my own little problems when I talked to you I wasn't even thinking about it yet. I saw her last night for her 60th birthday party, and she was normal, not worrying about it one bit, but today I am a bit worried now that is actually happening sad

What have the doctors said? Is it an unusual operation or is it something they've done many times before? Although it's not much of a comfort for you at this point, I do think it's comforting to know that at least her life isn't at stake.

I really understand that it feels horrible anyway though. I remember when my father lost an eye in an accident and he came out from surgery and looked so helpless with tubes coming out of his mouth. It broke my heart.

sad Oh no!
No I really don't know any details, whether this is unusual or anything. I'm still scared because lots of people lose their lives in little routine operations and stuff, reactions to drugs etc, mistakes. confused

They should have informed you about the risks involved or lack thereof. Not knowing is what is making you worried. To me it sounds like a fairly routine operation though. I can't imagine that they wouldn't have done something like this before. And I definitely don't think her life is at stake. It just isn't that kind of an operation.

I'm sure my parents know all about it, it's just me left out of the loop, I should've asked more questions but I felt last night was a birthday party and not really the right time and place to ask about it.

Yeah, really bad timing. She has spent the whole weekend doing stuff by herself - seeing friends, movies, concerts and stuff. She didn't want a party or make a big deal, but you only turn 60 once, she was not allowed any alcohol yesterday! bad luck!
