I'm shocked no one said this, the Empire State Building. The view from the 86th floor is spectacular.

As many said, check out the museums. The Met is so huge. You probably won't finish it in a day. You should also go to the Bronx and check out The Bronx Zoo and The NY Botanical Gardens. They have the prettiest orchids I've ever seen.

When we were getting ready to leave, we were out front while the teacher was counting heads and one of my class mates kept going to the curb and hailing cabs and then when one would pull up, she would say "NEVERMIND!!" and they'd drive off. I was on the steps cracking up. And i'm surprised they kept coming because she's black falloff

go to juniors and eat some cheesecake. http://www.juniorscheesecake.com/ wink

take the Q train over the Manhattan bridge and see the statue of liberty.

Or take the ferry and see it all up close.

go to the cloisters, it's really cool up there.

The museum of natural history is fun.

Renting a bicycle and riding around central park is cheap and awesome.

hmmm

I love walking around alphabet city in the east village.

Take a picture of CBGB before it gets torn down and turned into a condo. They might let you walk around and take a peak even if there's not a show going on.

Union Square, just to say you went to Union Square.

Go to Times Square and see if you can find the naked cowboy. If he's not there, leave Times Square immediately as that place is hell on earth. Unless you're going to Club Cache. wink

Kana is a cool tapas bar: http://www.kanatapasbar.com

Cuba has lots of yummy food and is near this record store that sells Prince..um..stuff: http://www.cubanyc.com/cu...urant.html
you may need a reservation for that place.

That's all I can think of right now. Have fun!!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York has a lot of good Vermeer's, Natisse.

From my point of view, Vermeer is a MUST SEE, even before Rembrandt, as Vermeer's paintings are so much rarer and the chance to go and see them should not be passed.

In the Met they have five amazing Vermeers.

Go check them out at http://essentialvermeer.20m.com

[Edited 3/1/06 3:55am]

hmmm The Frick Museum also has THREE Vermeers, and considering there are only about 30 confirmed Vermeers in the world, between the Met and the Frick, New York has at least 8, then!

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

eh...skip the Empire State Building...you wait in line to wait in line to wait in line. And I'm of the mindset that if you've been to the top of one tall building you've been to them all. Although I've heard the newly re-opend top of Rockefeller Center is cool. Here's a link: http://www.topoftherockny...c/site.htm

Some other ideas:

Washington Square Park (in the Village). This is where Basquiat & Keith Haring used to hang out in the 80s. It's surrounded by NYU...and there is a mini-Arc de Triomphe monument.

Radio City Music Hall "Stage Door Tour: a behind the scenes tour of the Art Deco building and meet a REAL LIVE Rockette! I took my mom on this. My favorite part was the two poster-sized pics of Prince performing there from the 90s. smile

I work at a museum and of course HIGHLY recommend museum visits (MoMA, Met, Guggie); but don't sleep on the smaller museums either--like the Neue Gallery, the New Museum for Contemporary Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Rubin Museum (Tibetan/Himalayan art), the Asia Society, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum or the Frick Collection. Check their respective websites for current exhibitions or to see which ones have collections of the type of art you like! cool

PS1 Museum in Long Island City is my favorite museum in the city to visit...it's just one stop out of Manhattan via the F train, and once you step in the museum, it's like a modern art theme park or haunted house...most of the stuff is interactive, and you can just spend the whole day playing there. It's huge, too - it's a converted public school building.

My best suggestion is take one day and don't "do" anything. just wander around downtown Manhattan, don't forget chinatown...explore, and just feel the atmosphere of the city.
It's more fun to discover then to go find somthing on purpose. cool present

Yep, it's a great tourist attraction. On a nice, clear day, the place is packed.

Funny thing is, I've worked here over a decade, and I've never been to the top.
