Riverside Judge Resigns After Weekend Arrest
McKeon Accused Of Drunken Driving, Drug Possession

POSTED: 9:41 am CST February 27, 2006
UPDATED: 6:58 pm CST February 27, 2006

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Riverside municipal judge resigned his position Monday after being accused of possessing drugs and drunken driving.

Judge Charles McKeon was arrested at about 2 a.m. Sunday near Barry Road and Roanridge in Kansas City

A police report states that McKeon was in an accident near 64th Street and North Prairie View Road, but he left the scene.

Officers arrested McKeon after he refused to take a field sobriety test and refused to be interviewed by police at the scene.

The police report described McKeon as belligerent and uncooperative. Officers said the judge's eyes were bloodshot and watery and that he stumbled as he walked.

When police searched McKeon's vehicle, they allegedly found white rocks -- believed to be cocaine -- and a crystal-like material in a plastic baggie.

When McKeon was taken to a restroom at the police station, officers said he tried to consume large amounts of water to confuse the breathalyzer machine, according to the police report.

The report also said the judge banged his head on the wall. McKeon was taken to a local hospital. Police said the judge pretended to be unconscious, although officers caught him talking to hospital staffers.

McKeon was released from the hospital and booked at the police station.

KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported that police are saving a dashboard recording of the incident and are building a potential DUI and possession of a controlled substance case against McKeon.

Mahoney reported that McKeon has a reputation as being a good defense lawyer and a no-nonsense municipal judge.

Municipal judges usually handle traffic court and minor city ordinance violations. Riverside has already appointed Thomas Fincham as a special municipal judge to temporarily replace McKeon.
