have you opened your volume settings?

there's 5 different volumes.

main
wave
cd audio
sw synth
cd speaker

my guess is that you don't have the cd volume up high enough.

Make sure you have the correct type of device selected. Go to your Control Panel, click on "Sounds and Audio Devices" and look under "Speaker Settings". Click on the "Advanced" button and make sure you have the correct type of speakers selected.

Also, you may want to try reinstalling your audio codecs.

Also, in Windows Media Player, make sure you aren't using any of it's Speaker Enhancement features, as most of them sound like crap.

There's the K-Lite codec pack, which has a bunch of common audio and video codecs all bundled into one.

Maybe your drivers need updating??

Go to Start, then control panel, click switch to classic view(Top rite) then click system, then on the top tool bar choose "hardware" and click device manager..find sound, video and game controllers, open that up and choose realtek AC'97 audio double click it and go to drivers on the top tool bar and click update drivers..... hopefully U have realtek AC'97 audio, cause im not sure about other sound drivers!!
