i saw it and:

1. thought it was indeed "average".
2. thought the messages, while well-intentioned, were about as subtle as a bull in a china shop
3. thought it "borrowed" from a few better made films ("what's love got to do with it" comes to mind)

with that being said, i'm glad that Hollywood sees that there is a positive market for Black folks out there. now if these same Black folks can turn out to support films by Spike Lee, Antoine Fuqua, F. Gary Gray, and some other minority directors, then that is even better. the fact that the last two of the last four #1 films in America involve Black men dressing up as older Black women is more distressing than anything. wink

And the fact more black people disgust at a self made director, producer, writer of positive messages while palying himself, a grandmother, and an uncle is a shame too.

What was the difference when Martin played Big Momma? Or Eddie Murphy as The Klumps? Or even Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire?

disbelief

Everyone does not have to agree with you and the otehr 99 percent black people out there saying that movie was good. I said it was avg and he too. My latino boy cried like a baby in it and my mix friend shed a tear. I said that movie Troy was awful.

yo i ain't hating on the brotha--i just said it was an average film with a lot of recycled themes that have been done better in better films. it was an OK film--not some landmark cinematic achievement. not to mention the conflicting messages it sent out (showing penny get abused on good times on tv while madea beats the foster child; getting back at an abusive husband by throwing hot grits in his face and beating him with a iron skillet--how Christian!)
Usher Dem Franchize Boys or Beyonce could have albums debut at #1--that doesn't mean that it's a great album--just means that a whole lot of people went out and bought it. Hopefully, for his next movie, Tyler Perry can learn to smooth out the transitional scenes between heavy handed sermonizing and slapstick comedy--the play was much better at doing this.
JMHO. wink

Watching the plays (my fav. being "Class Reunion") I dont know how he could've translated the play in2 a movie and making it well. His Family Reunion play was way different than the movie. Though the same themes were instilled.

I cant even really compare the two.

So u said there are other movies that have done it better yeah, there are LOTS of movies that have the same plot and theme (just like any ol horror movie or family craziness comedy or pet movie), I'm just saying my opinion that this movie should be seen by familys and youngins these days.

Im glad Madea attracts the youth audience, because without Madea I dont know if alot of the younger fans would even be concerned.

just went back and watched the play again tonight on dvd--hate to say it--THE PLAY IS JUST BETTER! the play has life, and straddles the line between seriousness and comedy far better than that overdone Lifetime Movie on Starz did.
I'll stick to the plays.

I can't draw that conclusion based on what he said in the article. It is clear that he feels excluded.. because he can't relate. But who say's that he should have to relate on a race level. He could have related on so many other levels.. he chose to use the one thing that divides people. It was a feel good movie..and a wake up call to the majority. Maybe if he wasnt the center of the universe in every movie, television show etc. he could comprehend what it is 2 walk a mile in some one elses shoes.

I'm SAYIN'!!! clapping That's like me bitching about a movie or tv show where the characters are rich & White - I'm the exact opposite, but does that mean I can't enjoy it? Relate to it on SOME level (maybe the relationships involved, the desires of the characters, etc)??? I used to love the shit outta 90210 lol Come on, this dude didn't even try - it's one thing to call a movie out for being bad, it's another to diss it b/c you don't see yourself in it & you choose to shut down. neutral

I honestly thought that the play verison of "Dairy" was a little better than the movie...It had more laughs and was more emotional (it also explained some things better...like who Daddy charles was...but why was he living in Meada's house in the movie verison). I want to see this new movie, too but I still think I'll like the play better. In fact, I've liked all the plays better than "Dairy", the movie. "Meet The Browns" was the best (mostly because it was the funniest) but unless Meada is written into it, it probably won't see the light of day.
