Liebesman makes date with a killer

Wed Feb 22, 1:14 AM ET

Jonathan Liebesman, director of the upcoming "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel, is in negotiations to direct the remake of horror classic "Friday the 13th" for New Line Cinema.

"Friday" made Jason, the unstoppable hockey mask-wearing killer, a 1980s horror icon, though the serial killer made only a brief appearance in the final frames of the first movie. Jason didn't even don the famous mask until the third movie.

Jason will wear the mask for the remake, written by Mark Wheaton, which will incorporate components of the franchise's films. The setting will be that of the first movie, Crystal Lake.

Liebesman is wrapping production on the untitled "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel, which, like the "Friday" remake, is produced by Platinum Dunes for New Line.

A Friday the 13th does fall in October this year, and there was speculation that the movie would be made quickly to capitalize on that. But Platinum Dunes and New Line already have scheduled the "Texas Chainsaw" prequel for release that month, on October 6. "Friday" will be a 2007 release.

a bunch of teens who praise these shitty ass remakes will probably be first in line to see it. I know most horror fans my age probably won't see it....I sound old by saying that. Funny thing is that I'm not.....it's just that they're remaking it too soon.....better yet how about not remake it at all. lol

I'll see it. Why not? At this point, any Friday the 13th sequal that could possibly come out is nothing but a remake of the one prior to it. How original is part 14 of a movie where the same guy kills the same sort of victim for the same reason as in the previous installment?

Its a horror movie, guys...not the Mona Lisa. lol

But it's just another example that Hollywood can only put out recycled crap rather than coming up with original stories. I'm okay with sequels, but remakes just get me mad

Eh...its Hollywood though. Its supposed to be mindless fluff. If you want decent and original cinema, go to your local arthouse theatre and see something. A romantic comedy by any other name is still the same ol' romantic comedy. The same goes for every Hollywood movie genre.

Nobody knows what they're doing at this point. All that's defnite is that Michael Bay is involved (barf) and that there will be another F13 film (barfbarf) and that it will either be a prequel or remake (barfbarfbarf)

They've been talking about that for a few years now, but since the longtime producer of the series died in the Jordan hotel bombing last year, everything with the Halloween series is on hold.

Jason wasn't even the killer in the first one. I don't get it.

This almost reminds me of the director commentary on Freddy VS Jason, where the director (some foreign guy) admnits he came into the project knowing very little about either of the two series.

There are a few things the original Friday the 13th introduced into the horror film.

However because of low budget they really couldn't take the theories to the next level.

I seen one or two of those things used in the "Freddy vs Jason" film. Althought that was a stupid premis for a movie, I was stuned by the use of the film tricks introducted into horror films.

If done right, that moive can kick ass better then the original.

I will keep my fingers crossed for that one.
