When communicating with people who are inarticulate you will be affected; most likely you will try to compensate using simpler words and basic structure, or you will stop speaking as much. In either instance, you will feel like you’re getting “stupider.” Since it works both ways, it might be incumbent upon you to raise the intellect of those around you, this however will not work with people who knowingly like to “keep it real”, real dumb. Well, living in Thailand certainly makes it difficult for me to not lapse into pigeon English. Sometimes it's a necessity to speak poor English to get what you want in this country, since speaking correctly will mean you're not understood. | |
