I know some rather famous Belgian people, but I guess that doesn't count on this thread.
I had a phone-chat with Beck once, about PJ Harvey. I was twelve years old at the time. And the tennis-player Xavier Malisse was in the same class as me. Kim Clijsters went to the same school, but she's a few years younger than me. We had a verbal fight once though, over the last waffle.

i spent an evening hanging out with tina weymouth and chris franz of talking heads/tom tom club, and i've chatted with tina in person and online a few times since. she's an awesome lady.
i also went to a very weird dinner party thrown by a friend of mine in new york, where i wound up sitting on the couch eating leftover pasta with ed koch.

Evi Goffin, the singer of the dance-formation Lasgo ('I can see it in your eeeeeyes, there is something, something you have to tell me'....) was my best friend in the first two years of high-school. Eddy Boutmans is an important politician, of the left formation 'Groen' (Green). My niece was together with the British artist Billy Childish (The Headcoats) for a long time. He 's famous in the dark underground circuit. Only 45-year old punk-lovers rave about him. I know Geert Hunaerts personally, who's an Belgian actor. My ex-boyfriend was Helder, a great musician who will become really famous when his second cd comes out.

Oh, completely forgot that I hung out and had dinner with Karen Grassle a few years ago... She most famously played "Ma" on Little House on the Prairie.
Here she is: | |

Ah well, if she makes it down here again sometime in the near-enough future (she's theatre now - works in France on occasion)... I'll be sure and ask her for you.

I forgot one of the best encounters...
At university I made a rather big work on Ivo Michiels, who was an 'avant-garde' writer in the fifties. Eccentric man, crazy book, hated by many but loved by me. He has been living in the Provence (south of France) for a long time. He's 85 now, his wife is 20 years longer. They live on the top of a hill, in a pittoresque house full of cats. I wrote him a letter, adding some of my poetry. We wrote back, I wrote a second one... and that summer I went to visit him in France. We drank three bottles of wine together and had so much fun.

Ah well, maybe that sort of thing will work for me after I write this thesis on Duran Duran. Fat chance!

I met a bunch of fairly well-known people when I hosted a little radio show for a few years. Also, it's quite easy to run into celebrities in Stockholm since pretty much all of them come here when they decide to "do Scandinavia". Therefore it doesn't feel like a big deal anymore.
Anyway, I think these are my most amusing run-ins with celebs: 1. Lloyd Kaufman, creator of such fantastic movie masterpieces as "The Toxic Avenger" and "Class Of Nuke Em High", tried to set me up with a girl that worked at the radio station we'd taken him to after kidnapping him at the Stockholm Film Festival. This old man with his business suit and distinguished look is the most insistant mo-fo I've ever met, I can tell you that. 2. I was at the airport in Nice, sitting on a bench and flicking through the booklet to U2's "Actung Baby" when suddenly the guy next to me starts pointing at the pictures in it. I take off my headphones and realize that it's Bono. Talkative as he apparently can be, he started telling me about the pictures. The Edge, who was sitting further away on the same bench seemed unamused. 3. Thomas DiLeva, a local Swedish musician who is known for his soft-spoken style and messages about peace, love and spaceflowers, elbowed his way through a nightclub that was closing and eventually began to push people so hard that they started falling over right and left. Some of them fell on a detachable wall that separated the hallway from the place where you hang your clothes, causing it to collapse and basically crush the people on the other side. As they were struggling to climb out of the huge pile of clothes, DiLeva smiled and said "peace to you all" in his softest voice.
