The film version of GREY GARDENS has been cast...

from Variety...

Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange will star in "Grey Gardens," a fact-based drama about two eccentric relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy who made headlines when the health department threatened to raid their flea- and raccoon-infested East Hampton, N.Y., estate.

Commercials director Michael Sucsy wrote the script and will make his feature directing debut on the project this summer. He'll produce with Lucy
Barzun and Rachael Horovitz.

Barrymore will play Little Edie, and Lange will play her mother, Big Edie Bouvier Beale, the socialite cousin and aunt, respectively, of Kennedy Onassis. The Edies made headlines around the world when Jackie O herself materialized to rescue her family from public disgrace.

The Edies were then the subjects of "Grey Gardens," a 1976 docu by David and Albert Maysles, whose rights will be part of the movie package.

Docu, which showed the women living in squalor, made a cult figure of Little Edie. She got a nightclub singing job as a result. Years after their deaths, the Edies have Web sites devoted to them as well as an Off Broadway play.

Sucsy, who summered in nearby Quogue, grew up with the legend of the women and hunted down rights to personal correspondence and journals that chronicle Little Edie's struggle to break free of her mother after they retreated from Park Avenue for the Hamptons.

The film will cover 40 years. Kennedy Onassis will be a character in the film, as will Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, who bought the crumbling mansion
from Little Edie after her mother's death.

"You couldn't capture the eccentric nature of those women better than the documentary did, but it left me with so many questions of what led them there," Sucsy said.

CAA and Cinetic Media are packaging the project.

my first thought was OH GOD, BLASPHEMY!!!!

but the more i think about it, the more i think it could work....drew's gonna REALLY have to do some dialogue/dialect training, because grey garden fans won't take any half-assed portrayals of little edie. no no no!

Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange will star in "Grey Gardens,"

I hear contract negotiations have been held up, as Drew has requested a separate trailer for her saggy boobs. But, hey - if she drops out, that chick from SNL can always step-in (was that not a wicked Drew Barrymore impression? lol).

The only reason I even know what the hell Grey Gardens is is that I read that Winona Ryder boff and Kevin Aucoin liked watching it together. Incidentally, I happened to meet Kevin* a number of years back when a friend of mine went to one of his book signings. She told me he was flirting with me, but what do I know? shrug He was a very sweet guy. RIP. pray

*Obligatory Ace-post namedrop.

at least the little edie role didn't go to madonna or renee "punkinpuss" zellwegger. they were battling for the role for a while. i hope they're pissed off!

i can imagine kevin aucoin loving grey gardens...it's kind of a hipster and/or gay cult classic, and he fit into both categories. nod

I'll see it...although, I think John Waters would have made a better "dramatic" version in the 70s.

a little bit of trivia: john waters has always said that if he ever directed a movie that wasn't based on his own story idea, it would be an adaptation of the novel "a confederacy of dunces" - which i could totally see, because the book reads like a slightly more sophisticated john waters flick (only it's set in new orleans). sadly, the movie has been given to someone else, and it's now a will farrell vehicle. sigh

i've never heard waters talk about grey gardens. hmmm

that's exactly my thoughts...cos as much as I think drew is cute and sweet and generally alright, she always just comes off as, well, DREW in every role she plays.
