fantasyislander said: theAudience said: *"Then spare the rod and spoil the child."
~Hudibras by Samuel Butler *(check the background of this quote which has nothing to do with what people think.) actually, in the bible when it refers to "rod" it's not talking about a rod you spank/beat with. it's the shepherd's rod which is used to gently direct the sheep on the correct path. That's one interpretation. The spare the rod quote by Butler is often confused as a direct Bible quote. He that spareth his rod hateth his son. is the closest actual Biblical quote on the subject. I feel it is vitally important to teach your children how to fetch "things" from the fridge. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

fantasyislander said: dreamfactory313 said: Great advice! I think that it is really important not to physically discipline kids. Doing so teaches them that it is ok to physically attack people when they dont get their way. Parents have got to be patient, take the upperhand and reason with their kids from a very very young age. you don't have kids, do you? No. I dont have children but I'll want them at some point. I do interact with kids on a regular basis though.

aside from that, my answers are... *PAY ATTENTION *LISTEN *LOVE *BE HONEST *BE OPEN *REMEMBER WHY YOU HAVE KIDS AND WHO'S CHOICE IT WAS. *TAKE ONE DAY AT A TIME *ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT *ENJOY THE PARENTING JOB, ITS A FANTASTIC ONE TO HAVE *ENJOY EVERY MOMENT, THEY PASS SO QUICKLY..... *GET TO KNOW YOUR KIDS, THEY ARE GREAT PEOPLE *TIME, TIME, TIME... GIVE THEM ALL YOU CAN *LEARN TOGETHER *TRY NEW THINGS TOGETHER, ITS GREAT FOR THE BONDING *TRY TO REMAIN CALM *TEACH THEM ABOUT WHERE YOU CAME FROM, MISTAKES YOU MADE ALONG THE WAY, AND HOW THEY CAN MAYBE AVOID THOSE MISTAKES *LAUGH TOGETHER... HAVE FUN AND GIGGLE, ENJOY THEIR COMPANY. *GET TO KNOW THEIR FRIENDS ON A FIRST NAME BASIS... THIS HELPS FOR SO MANY REASONS *PROTECT THEM.. AFTER ALL, THATS YOUR JOB *GET TO KNOW THEM AS PEOPLE, THEY HAVE INDIVIDUAL IDEAS OF THEIR OWN THAT NEED TO BE RESPECTED *DONT BE AFRAID TO TELL THEM NO, SOMETIMES ITS FOR THEIR OWN GOOD. *LIVE FOR THE MOMENT, BUT KEEP THE FUTURE IN MIND... IF ITS OK TODAY, IT HAS TO BE OK FOR TOMORROW TOO, CHILDREN DONT UNDERSTAND OTHERWISE *BE SURE TO TEACH ACCEPTANCE AND LOVE FOR OTHERS DONT BREED HATE, THERE'S NO ROOM FOR THAT off the top of my head, thats what i try to keep in mind... its gonna be interesting to see the answers that come up in here org kids Great list! Don't raise your male children to be romantic sissy boys.
Don't raise your female children to play games, believe in gender roles and expect men to do everything.

I think that parents should read to their kids whenever they can from an early age. They pick things up that we dont even realize.
Expose kids to the arts at an early age. Music, dance, sculpture, paintings, arhitecture, etc. Get kids physically active and eating properly early. There is no reason why a child should have type 2 diabetes or be morbidly obese as a 12 year old.
