If U want Lights Out, You better give up on Load balancing

Lights-out distributions utilizing Novell ZenWorks is a pain in the ass, but it sure helps decrease the bandwith burden on large networks during production distributions of largescale applications.

In today’s N-tier environments, you’d think that applications have become relatively thin on user desktops. After all, if you move your business logic to the second tier, all you need is a simple Java interface, or .net interface on the front end. Those wishing to use legacy VB6 or other older front end interfaces can leverage J-Integra to make the appropriate translated calls to the Java business logic tier.

The problem is that this is all bullshit. Even your largest, richest companies still suffer from user desktops with super-fat clients. And with call centers utilizing these bulky clients, distribution of software to client desktops over the network absolutely necessitates a platform like SMS ill, Artiris rolleyes, or Novell ZenWorks thumbs up!
The problem with lights out distributions is that if you have a drive mapped scheme (and you really should if you’re distributing from multi application server environments with load balancing), you lose such load balancing features during the lights out. This is because drive mappings are performed upon user login when their login scripts are distributed. During Lights-Out distributions, no user is actually logged into the PC; ergo, there are no available drive mappings. This means, to achieve load balancing you have to develop multiple version of your AOT e-Directory app objects, each one specifically configured to pull from a server based on the UNC path, explicitly stated—easy to set up , but require lots of manual preparation prone to mistakes.

The fucking thing is that this becomes a necessary evil because Lights-Out distributions can be done (as previously stated) before the users come in during the morning, and they don’t even have to be logged in. The network decongestion that results is amazing.

I’m sorry, but no other offering beats Novell’s distributions offerings. Not Artiris, not Tivoly, and especially not SMS-crapware.
