buying a DVD burner: ANY OPINIONS? It just dawned on me that instead of buying another standard DVD player I need a burner to get some of this shit off my Tivo - it's like an extra job trying to keep shit from getting deleted, there's so little room!
Just starting to consider brands & features. Don't want anything terribly fancy, would like to spend in the ballpark of $100-150 & definitely won't go over $200. Looking for any opinions/advice/compatibility tips/horror stories y'all might have. And an explanation of this progressive scan shit would be cool too Thanks

I just got a new dvd drive installed the other week. But the bugger, just put in a standard one, and I wanted a DVD recorder/burner
So now, 3 weeks later I gotta get a DVD recorder/burner. The man is coming tmrw to install it, so I dunno what kind it is, or what it does. He said it would be about £40 (prolly about $65 - I dunno) So when he comes, I will ask him some questions and get back to you.

See that's another thing - I'm thinking of just getting a stand-alone to replace the DVD player that's w/ the tv/tivo & all that. I'm mainly concerned with burning stuff off my Tivo, though it would be nice to have the ability to do it off the computer too. That said, I have a wireless cable modem b/c my comp is across the room from my cable connection. I know there are features w/ Tivo to connect it wirelessly to the computer & burn shit that way (making the computer burner option more attractive & cheaper) but I've just never bothered w/ all that. That's the one thing about all these fucking gadgets - you get a few, eventually they all have the ability to talk to each other & you gotta figure all that shit out I mean you don't HAVE to, but if it's cost effective in the long run hell, why not?

Oh sorry, I thought you meant a computer one when it comes to things like these, I havent a clue, so I am not the best person to ask. Yeah the guy is installing it in my tower. I just got so much work and photos on my comp, I need to save and back them up to DVD, which will free me some space on my bastid computer. I really should just invest in a new 'puter, but I will prolly break and fuck that one up too..

Good Luck with it though Or you may wanna come back and check if some techie has posted DAMN, sorry somebody stole your shit I'm really not taking advantage of my Tivo services. All this time I've been trying to figure out how to get my ITunes to play in the room (the docking stations don't seem powerful enough, etc) & Tivo has a feature that will access my mp3's, photos, etc. & play them from there I may just go w/ the whole Tivo/comp burner thing. Only thing that sucks is there's specific software you have to have to play the burned Tivo dvd's Always a scam involved, isn't it? But I have to compare all the costs for this shit, I feel like I'm wanting something simple & complicating it

A lot of times certain television programs cannot be recorded to a DVD Recorder because they put a copywrite protection on them, and unless you have a gadget to remove the copywerite you aren't able to record them. So, just a heads up on that. The shows you have on your TiVo may not have a copywrite. I've only run into this a few times.
Anyway, I have a Sony RDR GX315 DVD Recorder and I haven't had any problems with it. The nice thing about it is that you can copy your VHS onto DVD, too. I paid $295 for it though, but the price was well worth it because the images it records are great quality. I had a less expensive one a while back and the picture ended up fuzzy after recording and other times it was set to record off of my cable and I'd come home and the DVD was empty. As for the gadget to remove the copywrite protection from certain television programs and DVD's, I bought the Red Pro from www.xdimax.com. Beware though, this thing is a pain in the ass to get working and they don't offer phone support, but when you finally do get it to work properly it does remove the copywrite so that you are able to record. All I know about progressive scan is that the image is shown/recorded in one shot, whereas the other one separates the image into two and the image isn't as good of a quality.
