I am definately going to go for a run outside today just to get the full effect. Lucky for me I am leaving for Florida in the morning before it gets old.

The coldest I've ever experienced was -34 C in Norway a few years ago. Our car stopped (we found out later that it was because little tiny drops of water in the gasoline had frozen and somehow clogged the engine ). Since we were far away from the nearest town, out of range for cell phones and not exactly on a highway we realized that our lives could be in danger, so we started discussing how to start a fire and make the best use of the clothes we had. Luckily, after around 45 minutes a car came by and we managed to sort out the situation. I can tell you though that by then I was ready to put on my cross-country skis and go looking for the nearest house. You can only sit tight and hope for the best for so long when it's -34C... .

No kidding! That's seriously dangerous. I'm going to go run my car during my lunch break and hope for the best. It's actually colder now then when I left this morning. |

That must be the most thrilling event I've heard of for some time. Glad you got out of it well. I really don't like the cold. I will be shrieking in ten days, when I go to Italy to ski.

Yeah, it became life threatening quite fast and didn't feel good at all. I felt so happy that we had our skis with us though. Although the road was terrible for driving it would have been perfect for skiing. I really don't like the cold. I will be shrieking in ten days, when I go to Italy to ski.
Will the Olympics still be on then? You should try to catch some of it!

And even this I watch with only one eye open... I think all I will do is ski, ski, ski, eat, ski, ski, ski, go to the sauna, eat, ski, ski, ski

I've been skiing since I was 4, so it's a passion. It must be the only week of the entire year I willingly go to bed at 11 pm every evening. I didn't go last year, never had to skip it before, so I'm really thrilled.

I've skied since I was around the same age by the way. We should meet up and dominate those mountains some day. [Edited 2/17/06 12:17pm]

but that is exactly what you are supposed to do. people die when they try to go for help. it may not have seemed like it at the time but you were much better off protected from the elements inside the car. here everyone should have a winter survival bag with them in the car. you keep extra socks and scarves and mits in there and hopefully some of those chemical hand warmer packs. you also have a tin can, matches and candles to melt snow and hard candies for sugar. and you also put gas line antifreeze in your gas tank

It's obvious that you haven't sat in a car for 45 minutes in -34C... It gets unbearable fast, and if the car isn't huge then you can't move around much in order to stay warm. To put on skis and try to find help wasn't a bad idea at all, especially since I of course would have skied along the road anyway (and therefore would have seen if help was on the way). I might have agreed with you before I ended up in this situation, but reality taught me otherwise. and you also put gas line antifreeze in your gas tank
We had done that. Apparently it wasn't enough.

yes actually i have
on more than one occasion actually. but the most recent was two years ago. the only difference being that i knew help was coming so just had to sit tight. i had my big winter boots in the car with me and decided to put them and an extra pair of socks on right away. of course they were the same temperature as the car so my feet felt like they were going to fall off! but it was still better in the long run than sitting there in my runners. it was after that episode that i bought those chemical hand warmers
