Man, U.S. Immigration is a real bitch...

Seriously, it sucks so much. I am so in love with this girl in California who's a Lawful Permanent Resident. We've been doing the long distance thing for over two years now, and I really can't stress just how much I love her. No words can describe that, and that honestly isn't an exagerration of any kind.

And yet, since she's technically not a Citizen yet, it's so damn hard to actually get to live there and be together the way we so desperately want. I've "been with her" many times, but it's not the same when it's not permanent. It's so hard.

Anyone ever dealt with anything like this? I'm assuming not, but you never know. I just had to vent anyway.

I'm Canadian btw.

Yeah, I plan on doing that once I have the money for it, but I've done tons and tons of reading.

My best bet is to go there on a Student Visa, but that's not exactly a good option, seeing as how the rates for non-residents at American Colleges are beyond insane.

If she really means that much to you, you will do that. But the lawyer knows the ropes to immigrating and procedure.

She definitely means that much to me. Easily. Being without her isn't even an option to me.

I don't know, I'm gonna be teaching English in Japan for about a year, so I guess if I make enough money there (which is more than possible, if not very likely given my contacts there), spending $30,000 would be worth it 'til she's then a Citizen and can sponsor me without me having to leave the country.

lol Life would be so much easier if I could just fall for some Canadian girl here.

It's funny; I've never had a problem getting girls, and yet I'm gonna practically bankrupt myself 'cause I can't wait to be with this one girl.

An immigration lawyer will cost you thousands. Often they can't do much more for you than you could yourself. You got it right the first time, the US is a bitch to try and live in if you weren't born there or have some familial ties, etc.

We've been through this in both directions a few years ago.
It's very difficult to move to the US from Canada. Even if you were married they probably would want you to have a guaranteed job waiting for you.If they need teachers where you would like to live, it would help.
Why don't you call the American embassy in TO and get the information from them? They were extremely helpful to us a few years back. They actually gave us someones cancelled appointment and saved us years of waiting.I have a friend in Buffalo that's been waiting four years for her interview, she's here on a work visa, but she hates not knowing if she can stay.
It's probably much more difficult now because Homeland Security runs immigration. Green cards are pretty expensive now too, a renewal runs about $600
I hate to think what a new one costs.

my wife is Canadian. after several months of a "long distance thing" she moved to Austria around 8 years ago. At first she only got a visa for 6 months, but
before they were able to kick here out, well we got married smile even after that she had to renew her visa every once in a while, then she got a permanent one. now she has the Austrian citizenship, so no troubles anymore smile

Yeah... just getting into the country for a family vacation is tough.

My husband will have to travel all the way to Paris (we're in the south - it's a day's journey) - miss a day's work just to get a visa to visit his wife's country for a couple of weeks... where his own daughter has nationality... this infuriates me. mad

I feel for you. Britain is not the easiest place to go for my wife, a Thai woman, even for just a holiday.

Sounds like the US is strict too. Don't let it get you down. comfort

Man, that´s really tough....I´ve been in similar situations before so I know how it feels and you have my sympathy, back then we didn´t really think about getting married, it wasn´t that serious...but if your relationship is serious, as you say, why not ? Just have a good pre-nup and thibgs will workout fine without any risks....sure, a prenup sounds unromantic and selfish but hey, your situation is not normal and you two haven´t been able to experience a "normal" relationship so I guess she´ll understand.

The thing about Japan is worth considering, a friend of mine made huge amounts of money there and saved it all and spent it later when he´d come back again.

I never knew it´s so tough for Canadians...I mean to non-Americans like me, you guys are "almost" US-Americans because of the similarities in culture and language and I thofght that the USA is very tolerant with Canadians...I mean the world sure doesn´t automatically think "Canadian!" when they hear about people like Michael J. Fox or Pamela Anderson ( and countless other quasi-Americans) .

Is there really such a huge gap between you guys, especially when it comes to politics ? I mean it´s not mutual, is it ? Because I know it is ( or was ) quite easy for US citizens to migrate to Canada , right ? ( Like Rick James did).

Thanks for your sympathy.

I really do wanna marry her, but the thing is that she's not a Citizen yet. She's just a Lawful Permanet Resident, which means that if you get married and wanna bring your spouse to the country, they have to stay in their home country for years until they're at the front of a waiting list.

She emigrated to Canada from the Philippines when she was little, and then to the US a few years ago.

The rule is that you have to stay in the US as a Lawful Permanent Resident for five years before you can then become a Citizen. Once she's a Citizen, we're good.

I think she has about three or so years left to go.

And nah, I really don't see that many differences between me and Americans. I like the US. To me, it's like a Hollywood version of Canada. More drama and glitz, but otherwise the same.
