I consider myself 75% vegetarian. I mostly eat plant and animal substitutes instead of meat, but every once in a while I do eat chicken or seafood.

I never eat pork and avoid pork products when I can. I've got a few reasons for that. Pigs are among the more intelligent farm animals (a cow will eat until it's stomachs explode and lay in it's own shit, but a pig will do neither, for example) and for some reason, the more intelligent I think an animal is, the less willing I am to eat it's flesh. Make sense? I don't know. Second is the fact that swine are our closest genetic family next to apes and monkeys. It feels a bit close to cannibalism, to me. Third and probably the silliest reasons are Orwell's "Animal Farm" and the Beatles' "Piggies", both of which pop into my head whenever I have tried to eat pork. razz

I'm a vegetarian biggrin.I will eat a small bit of dairy and organic eggs from free range chickens once in a while. My oldest daughter is a strict vegan. I started more for health reasons and secondarily for humane reasons, but now it's majorly because it's a kinder, gentler lifestyle. My daughter has never wanted to eat any kind of animal.

I'm about 85% veggie. I don't cook meat at home and generally only eat meat if it's served to me when I am a guest in someone's home or once in a while I crave it and indulge. But that's getting more and more rare for me these days. I prefer to eat veggie.

i admit i'm conflicted about food issues in this world; i don't want to pay for/consume anything that originates from cruelty like factory farms.

thumbs up!

Doing what you think is right can be a hard thing in this instance. There's some stigma attached to being veg. . . it took awhile for that to pop up in my life, but when it did, it did so like a nuclear freakin' weapon. . . disbelief

That said, for all of the shit I've taken, withdrawing my financial support from factory farms is a choice that I'm proud of, and continue to feel very good about. smile

VEGETARIAN here and believe it is one of the most important choices I've made in my life. It's difficult because I live in rural Michigan, on Lake Huron where hunting, fishing and farming are common and with absolutely NO vegetarian restaurants near. Fortunately there is a nice selection of veggie food in a new superstore about 25 miles from me and for road trip days a great Trader Joes about 2 hours away. Gangsta and I take coolers and load up! I'm working on the vegan part now but am really struggling with it.

i love your story and thank you for the spell-correction..
with me..vegetarianism was looked at as an act of lunacy! and needless to say to i was acepted, rather than a diet choice it felt like as if i was coming out of the closet..which i think that wont be for another 4 years..lol..but i digress...i only wish i could be with you guys in that road trip!..it sounds fun!

I'm sorry. I'm an omnivorous loser. shrug

I've tried many times to drop meat. But that texture, that weight, that substance is just something portobella mushrooms, in all their glory, can't capture. And, yeah, I say that even though I'm a big fan of Moosewood, etc...

My wife and kid are pretty much vegetarian, and I love much of what they eat. But, for me, a totally vegetarian diet is like only eating clouds. I need something I can FEEL! redface
