MOVIES: "Something New" & "Take the Lead"

Saw that movie "Something New" on Saturday, many things I liked about it & many things I disliked about it lol It's the one about the professional Black woman who falls for her White landscaper dude (who is HELLA CUTE, who IS this dude anyway?).

It falls into a lot of the obvious traps - she's WAY uptight, he's way loose, she gives him a hard time for the longest, he's right there like a puppy lol In the end I kinda liked it, I just wish they'd given him more of a spine & not made her so rigid & fake...

There was a trailer for a new Antonio Banderas film called "Take the Lead" - a teacher guides his rambunctious reject students through the joys of ballroom dancing giggle In the end (which will undoubtedly be @ a contest of some sort) they combine his knowledge of ballroom dance with (you guessed it!) hip hop dance falloff

Tired, TIRED formula... yet it's still ever so slightly appealing I hate to say blackeye Can't say I'll see it in the theater, but I'm curious about how formulaic it will be - 100% or 110% lol

One good thing about it - Yaya from Top Model is in it woot!

I have no idea if she can act but surely she got in based on her skill as a dancer. I'm happy for her, I wanted her to get something out of that show since she didn't win smile

So has anyone checked out Something New? Thoughts?

Will anyone check out Take the Lead?

hmmm

I also saw Something New. Could Simon Baker be ANY cuter?! But I'm a sucker for blond blue-eyed types, always have been. shrug He had a TV show on a few years back, can't remember him from anything else, though.

Thought the same about it. My favorite scene was the dialogue that they had in the supermarket - it was relevant and very well written. I also agree that the basic plotline of her being uptight with the straight hair as opposed to the free-spirit that comes out with landscape guy (curly hair) was way too predictable. And how about dismissing Blair Underwood? I wish she made him even more of a "catch" instead of painting him so materialistic towards the end, it would have made her jump back to the landscaper more compelling and the choice more poignant.

As for the hip hop ballroom dance movie. That shit has got to be sheer comedy biggrin

yup i saw Something New last week. I thought while it wasn't the best movie i had seen this year so far, it wasn't too bad.

at first i was afraid that it was going to be another "Brown Sugar" mixed with "The Best Man" or "Love & Basketball", but it had some parts in there that I was glad they threw in. I would have walked out pissed if they would have just showed the goody goody parts of the relationship and then breaking up because he didn't show up on time for dinner or something....

but yeah that grocery store scene was great, only thing was, i felt that they could have made Blair Underwood's character more of like the type of "black man" that she was looking for which would have made it harder for her to go back eventually to the white guy. They made Blair look like the obvious wrong choice for her because he was so "uppity", therefore, of course she was going to go running back to ole landscaper dude, because he was loose and down to earth.

but what if Blair was down to earth also??? that would have really made her see who she really wanted...

TRUE... not to mention Blair is TIRED right about now evillol I mean, if he was in my face I suppose I'd have to think about it giggle but he is NOT the dream dude they always cast him to be. Let's get some new blood up in this mutha! smile

The supermarket scene was good, especially the first customer to look @ them funny lol After that it was a little over done... I LOVE the scene about her weave!!!! falloff I KNEW he was going there, that shit was priceless. lol

I think Blair's character was EXACTLY what she thought she was looking for nod The funny thing is when she got what she thought she wanted it didn't work - I absolutely LOVED the scene w/ them sitting together on the couch w/ their laptops working falloff She wanted someone in the same position she's in but look @ her position - very demanding, always working, & she (& the mom) were the MOST uppity characters in the movie lol Not saying wanting what you ARE is a bad choice, but I wondered how 2 such busy & driven people would make a relationship work... that is, when they made time to work on the relationship. And like she said, they had no "spark" wink

Exactly nod But I don't wanna dismiss it for some reason - though it'll be SO damn formulaic I gotta admit I'm curious about it shrug

true Alfrie's character was a bit snobbish...like the scene at the housewarming when Sanaa Lathan's parents were going to leave and her father said goodbye to Brian, but the mother just sought of wrote him off and just left like he wasn't standing right in front of her....
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
