Techie question about toshiba .. Hi guys, just a quickie to see if anyone knows a lot about computers, and what toshiba external (ie laptop technology) hard disk drives are like in terms of reliability.
just bought a plug n play external hard disk drive (80 gb) because the price seemed very reasonable.. then it suddenly dawned on me maybe its because toshiba are crap or have a bad reputation etc.. i dont know about these things, but i would consider toshiba to make pretty good stuff for computers.. yeay or nay?? !! any thoughts much appreciated! A response! its a 5400. Also how often do these things go wrong and is the data recoverable? im seriously screwed if i lose this data.. everything will be on it man.. i mean everything! i dont know how else to back up such large amounts of data..disc copying would take forever! A 7200 would have been better. That's why the price was so low. 7200s will be more expensive. However, if you're using it for backup, it should be good for the speed that it is. According to some reviews I've seen, Toshiba hard drives for laptops are somewhat noisy and get hot quick when writing data, and they have a short life span. Reviews for a couple of external drives at www.tomshardware.com rate them above average. Is this a true external drive, or is it a laptop drive? They're two different categories. How much data are you wanting to back up? Another idea would be to backup to DVD+Rs which hold 4.7GB, or a dual layer DVD which would hold 8.5GB.

Mainly just using it for backup. Does not need power supply. It runs off the usb port. I have one already but its full now (40 gb) but i'm worried how long these things last.. all my prince stuff man, vids, movies music and loads of other stuff to do with work etc.. im worried that this thing will one day just pack up on me, hence the new investment (80 gb toshiba) external coz there is no room on my laptop for all this! I just dont know what the average shelf life is for these external portable drives. 2-3 years? Here's a link to something similar I bought: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New...dZViewItem this are laptop drives but simply put into enclosures from what i understand. and thats what im worried about. laptop technology, when it goes duff.. is a fucker, and much harder to recover data than ordinary tower hard disk drives.. is that right? I'm not sure on the difficulty of recovering data on laptop drives. It does seem like these drives have more issues and a shorter life-span than your non-laptop hard drive, though. I'd personally go with a full size external drive with a USB 2.0 interface. I'd have to do some looking, but the USB 2.0 may restrict the data rate where 5400rpm may be just as good as a 7200rpm, so speed may be a non-factor there. The laptop drives generating too much heat is also a concern. I've never had one of my drives in my tower get hot on me, air flow or no air flow through the case. Also, being that the drive will be used primarilly for storage, I'm presuming it won't get used much and therefore should last longer. If you decide to go with an external drive that isn't a laptop drive, and if you got a good deal on the one you bought, you should be able to resell it on eBay for a profit and use that money towards the other drive. But that's just me.
