believe in yourself! Keep pursuing what you want, and if you want to write, keep trying, submit stuff, and learn from what those in the field tell you. Don't take all rejection as bad, use it as learning tools.

they dont believe in it because they probably wouldnt have the drive to go that far

i was laughed at when i decided that art would be my life...im still resented to this DAY...coming home from school my mom is barely speaking to me.

do what you feel in your heart is right, go with it and see where it takes you...you would hate to play the "what if" game if you took your folks "advice"

They don't have the right to tell you that your dream is daft, but there is a world of difference between local school magazines and The New Yorker. Your eagerness may have struck them as amusing.

It would have been nice if they had given you support and advice, I guess, but if not, so what. Do what you love, take your lumps, and at least you would have tried and they wouldn't have...

The great poet John Berryman once said something like, any good writer must paper their walls with rejection letters...

I understand you I'm in the works of trying to do the same exact thing. I'm trying to get my things published and my family thought I was joking around they think (like you said) its just a dream its just a phase or some crap like that. Its stressful yes....but keep at it...and prove them wrong. Thats what I want to do.

Come join my family- they love the idea of me publishing...they love the idea of me doin anything really. Having said that, whenever i wanna pursue MUSIC on another level, my mum, Godbless her, is all up in armz! To her i think music and the likez is for hobby or churchy kinda use ONLY. You know, i nice kinda showcase to remind us all we come from a real nice gene pool or somethin, i dunno lol . And i guess i'd be taking alot more riskz if she didn't feel that way! But she meanz well. I say do as your heart desirez. Look, i haven't given up on what i wanna do, i'm done with the arguing- and when you're young you just gotta use that negativity and fuel that into an 'i'll show them and myself damn it' attitude! Be realistic- they don't teach you that in school, and nor can they, it comez with life experience! And be open to constructive criticism, but listen to your gut feelingz when it comez to your own work. Join a writing group or do a course in it, you'll meet alot of other writerz and it will open alot of doors for you in as far as creativity is concerned and also work-wise you can form a good writing team and come up with some great ideas to sell. Don't worry! Just keep at it and don't give up! thumbs up!

Reminds me of when I was in college... told a boyfriend I had an idea for an article I wanted to submit to a magazine (they published personal articles from readers). He told me I was aiming too high, I was stupid enough to believe him.

Years later I was reading said magazine & saw an article written by a classmate of mine. Not fantastic, nothing I couldn't have done myself. The difference is she tried & got it - I listened to my stupid ass boyfriend & let an outsider take me down disbelief

ALWAYS believe in yourself, NEVER let someone tell you it can't be done or that you're a fool. Constructive criticism from people in that industry is one thing (to be taken w/ a grain of salt even), but lack of support from family & friends (who lack ambition themselves) is not something you can let stop you from trying. They'll see the light once you're successful... & ask you for money lol
