HelloHalo said: littlemissG said: Look at what's most popular in the mass media, that's all the proof you need that America is getting dumber.
Reality TV? - These show feature people removed from the reality most of us know, deserted islands, dating contest, people throw together under one roof to compete for money. All 100% driven by personality, not brains. Paris Hilton - Enough said Local News - Most news cast are just thinly diguised commericals for any new event or business between reports on crime, the government and the economy. The whole of american culture is geared more toward what you have, and what you look like than, what you know or what you do. That's the whole planet. Darling. The World is dumb all together. America is not dumb. If anything it is the smartest country on Earth. To quote the great Smashing Pumpkins. 'The world is a vampire'. Indeed it is. Well, in 10 years, china will be the most powerful country on earth, so really, america ain't shit anymore. Thank god for that.

I have read reports to the contrary.
People are actually becoming smarter. Watch a TV today and notice that a cop show today, compared to, say, hill street blues, does not have to spell out the plot. They hint and allude, and viewers have to put the pieces together themselves. Whilst technology has not helped at all with spelling, people's brains are working faster than ever before. News stories are shorter because people are able to absorb and make sense of snippets of news, also crime rates are falling and there is seriously LESS news to report, so trivial stuff is getting on the news, like Lindsey Lohan being bulimic making prime time news Anyway, the sensationalised news is making people believe it is not safe to outside anymore so they are building bigger houses and watch reality TV to escape - a chance to let their brains rest for an hour.

Yeah, but it is known that american news is pretty ropey on world events. I lived in america and whilst i dont remember avidly watching the news over there, it was pretty secluded to US news only (iam sure cnn are different though) Reality tv comes from europe originally i think? I know big brother was not "big" over there, but is over here? At the mo' iam watching the US dance contest "so u think u can dance", good show. Anyway, that wasn't relevant.....

Most countries seem to show mainly what's news in that country - in Argentina, except on cable, you wouldn't even know there WERE other countries! My German friend visited Australia and was shocked our news did not cover the German elections. I don't think this is limited to the USA.

In Europe you can just go anywhere by train, so you can be well travelled without ever leaving the ground - even poor students can do it. Lots of people in Australia can't afford to fly further than Bali for example, but we have a lot of migrants here, so in a sense the world came to us.
