Whale Rider

I watched this yesterday on the recommendation of a good mate.

WOW!

What a film! I related to it on a lot of levels. nod

New Zealand is simply breathtaking sigh, it's beautifully paced and Keisha Castle-Hughes was fantastic. The scene where she's making the speech at the end... worship Plus, the guy who plays her Dad is hot. razz

Not much of a critique from me there, sorry, but I just wanted to share that.

Anyone else seen this? Were you impressed?

Wonderful film! I remember all the reviews on its' release but, for some reason, I've never watched it. Katherine bought it on dvd - and Mel was down for the weekend - so we all curled up and watched it last night.

Makes you think a lot about parental roles, family ties, the importance of history, maintaining culture. And all those Maori men aren't bad, either. wink

How was your weekend, lovely? Good time in Worthing?

Great film. I related to it alot, too, as it mirrored my own childhood in a lot of ways. And that scene when she is giving that little speech at her school play, crying because her grandfather isn't there... bawl

Ok, I know why you say that - at one point, towards the end, I thought it might turn a bit cheesy. I won't reveal what happens - just in case there's anyone who hasn't seen it - but it's got a lot of charm.

A well-made feel-good flick, I guess.

read the book. it puts all the beauty that was onscreen into words and it is simply amazing. It's a quick read but very powerful.

Weirdly, and this has nothing to do with that one that swum up the Thames, I've been a bit obsessed with whales recently. hmm Just the sheer scale of them. I can't fathom it. So this film satisfied my whale fixation, too. lol

nod That's what ruined it for me and stuck in my mind as my overall impression. To be honest, I don't remember much of the rest of the movie so i can't say with certainty that it was equally cheesy. Maybe I missed out on something. Don't ask me to watch it again though, I don't think I'd be swayed that much. wink
