Let The Backlash Begin on Brokeback: Crash Wins SAG I, at this moment am predicting that Crash will win Best Picture for the Oscars..
Brokeback peaked way too early in the game..Theres over a month for people to stew over the Brokeback backlash (thats already started)....Crash's studio is doing a major DVD push for Crash and like last year when everyone thought Aviator would win... in comes a Paul Haggis ensemble piece that actors love to love... The Winner: CRASH (please note this has nothing to do with which film deserves to win....or which film is the best...just an analysis of the art of Oscar campaigning...) Space for sale...

Do you have any insight into how the winners are selected? I'm rather ignorant of the logistics. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

the SAGS are voted on by the actors in the union. And with such a large ensemble cast it was pretty obvious that Crash would nab the best picture. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Although I am a Brokeback enthusiast I am glad other movies are winning awards this season too.
So many awards and praise are hurting Brokeback a little bit in my opinion. People go expecting the greatest film since gone with the wind or something and might end up somewhat disappointed. It it just a great and touching little film. nothing more and nothing less. disappointing edit [Edited 1/30/06 0:05am]

I finally saw "Crash" this past weekend. It's a good movie, but it wasn't as great as I thought it would be,considering all the hype and good reviews.I don't know...maybe I need to watch it again? It's a provocative film, for sure.

for the SAGS? its voted on by the Screen Actor Guild union members like lazycrockett says... the oscars are actually voted using a weighted system and is voted by all members of the Academy....but only actors vote for acting nominees...directors vote for director nominees...screenwriters for writing....once the nominees are announced everyone votes for the eventual winner. That's exactly how I see it. A great cast too. Everyone in it was perfect for the story but the story started well but I was dissapointed at the ending. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

but also keep in mind that actors are the largest voting block in the Academy. Space for sale...

I wouldn't necessarily consider it backlash if Brokeback doesn't win all the awards, there's just a handful of really good movies that came out the past year that all deserve some recognition.
The backlash I've noticed lately though are all the parodies of Brokeback, trying to make a joke out of the movie. It's such a well made film that really got a hold of alot of people, that opponents of gays/gay rights, don't know how to react.

There is a huge gay population in Hollywood so i wouldn't count it out at the Oscars.

I think Lee is safe when it comes to winning Best Directer...but I have a hunch that Crash is going to pull off an upset. Unless the studio behind Brokeback does something daring like releasing the DVD of the film a few weeks prior to Oscar ballots due date. Keep in mind, Crash plays a lot better on the small screen then the scenic filled Brokeback. This was the exact same scenerio that happend to Saving Private Ryan. Ryan was still in theaters while Miramax released screeners of Shakspeare in Love.. and we all know how that turned out. Space for sale...

Wow. I'm just imagining Ludacris on an Oscar stage.

I really hope Crash wins. I was worried everybody was going to forget about because it came out so early in the year. Brokeback bored the hell out of me.

Crash? It was a good movie, with some good performances, but best picture
If the storyline weren't sooooo contrived, maybe. And that's such a fairly common criticism of the movie that it could (should) hurt it chances, imnsho. . [Edited 1/30/06 9:16am]

Ok, I saw Brokeback last night, and I have to say, WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL? They could NOT have made a more boring film about gay cowboys. I never felt that these two characters were in love until the last 30 minutes or so, that first sex scene was ridiculous, and the characters (especially Anne Hathaway) never really aged just got dumber-looking wigs...
The only character that I really felt anything for was Ennis' wife. Great performance; you really felt her shock and betrayal and the pain she felt though she waited for years to confront him. Oh yeah, and why was "Ennis" always pronounced "Anus"? I anticipated this film for months, thought I was going to love it, and was bored senseless. "Crash" deserved to win. That was a powerful film with a great ensemble performance. [Edited 1/30/06 9:33am]

There's contrived and there's "hey it just so happens that all these stories are tied together through an odd series of coincidences!" Does LA have a population of a couple a hundred people now? For a movie that has such potential to be smart, well acted and well made, that's just insulting! (rant over, all better now) [Edited 1/30/06 9:25am]

A movie with Matt Dillion and Ryan Phillipe winning Best Picture would destroy the universe.
My vote is for the movie with the hot gay sex!

I really liked what Jake said about Brokeback Mountain "It really is a beautiful love story." BUT what was going on when they were announcing their movie at SAG awards. Heath and Jake started giggling when they were reading the description of the movie. Maybe they were giggling about the description of the movie, bad writers. It was just weird. They were so uncomfortable.

M Did you see their interview on Oprah? They were joking around with eachother calling eachother "Jack Nasty", and stuff like that. Maybe there was some inside joke they got a kick out of or something.

Ledger's strange SAG behavior
Jakegyllen_caulf_7218077_600Some viewers were shocked at Heath Ledger’s apparent gay spoof at the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night. At the podium with Jake Gyllenhaal to introduce a clip from "Brokeback Mountain," Ledger kept putting his hands on his cocked hip as he read the teleprompter, acting like he was auditioning for the role of Carmen Ghia, the flamboyantly gay choreographer in “The Producers.” “It was insulting,” said one Hollywood insider after the show. “Heath lost a lot of support from the Hollywood gay community after that bizarre performance.” No one can figure out what Ledger could have been thinking or why he behaved so bizarrely onstage. Which makes it a real shame that the Directors Guild Awards, held the night before, weren’t televised. Then viewers would have seen Ledger’s heartfelt and sincere expression of gratitude to director Ang Lee, who won the DGA’s top filmmaker award that night. Paying tribute to Lee, Ledger thanked the director for “introducing us to these delicate characters. It took a delicate man to tell this story and that’s you.” To which, Lee then joked, “I don’t know about you, but that feels a little gay to me.” Maybe Ledger’s frankly fey SAG performance simply followed Lee’s DGA gay joke lead? Maybe he thought he was being really funny? Hey, it’s a theory. What's yours? http://stylescenes.latimes.com/ its starting already... Space for sale...
