JUST AN ORDINARY SOLDIER... Hi guys... I just wanted to share this with you all my Uncle's father passed away just after Christmas and he had written this many years ago (he'd actually shown me this before but I had forgotten how amazing it was) to read at his funeral one day... the day came but he was too emotional this was what he wrote - JUST AN ORDINARY SOLDIER. He was getting old & forgetful, & his hair was thinning fast, & we sat at the campfire telling stories of the past. Of a war that he had fought in, & the things that he had done. His experiences with his mates, they were heroes, every one. The time he went grenade fishing with some Yanks in a rowboat. Dad was just happy that the bloody thing could float. They saw some nubile native girls standing on their piered huts. The yanks jumped in & swam to them but Dad thought they were nuts. Dad was left alone on the boat because he couldn't swim. The Yanks said the water is 3ft deep, so he stepped in. He told so many yarns on that special camping night, but I won' to relay them 'cause I know you think I might. Sadly we'll hear his tales no longer, for he has passed away & the world won't note his passing, tho' a soldier died that day. He will not be mourned by many, just his children & his friends, for he lived an ordinary, quiet life to the end. Held a job & raised a family, Quietly going his own way. Now the world's a little poorer . for a soldier died that day. When Politicians & wealthy men leave this earth, their bodies lie in state. While thousands note their passing, & proclaim that they were great. Papers tell their stories, from the time that they were young, but the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed & unsung. Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land a bloke who breaks his promises, & cons his fellow man? Or the ordinary bloke who in times of war & strife, goes off to serve his country & offers up his life. A Politicians stipend & the style in which he lives, are sometimes disproportionate to the service that hi gives. While the ordinary soldier offers up his all & is paid off with a medal & perhaps a pension small. It's so easy to forget for it was so long ago, that the men & women of our country went to war, but we know. It was not the Politicians with their compromise & ploys, who won for us our freedom that this country now enjoys. Should you find yourself in danger with your enemies at hand, would you want a Politician with his ever shifting stand. Or would you prefer a soldier who has sworn to defend, his home, his family, his country, & would fight until the end. He was just a common soldier, & his ranks are growing thin, but his presence would remind us we may need his like again. For when countries are in conflict then we find the soldier's part, is to clean up all the troubles that the Politicians start. If we cannot do him honour while he's here to hear our praise, then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps , just a headline in a paper that would say:- "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, FOR A SOLDIER DIED TODAY" ...I just thought it was so awesome I had to share it | |
