Any band geeks out there?


I was a band geek and I'm still very proud of it. I was in the INDEPENDENCE 76TH CAVALRY MARCHING BAND. Between 1980 and 1985 were one of the best marching bands in the nation. I marched with an Alto sax and one year with a Baritone Sax.

i wasn't in band, but i had a lotta friends who were in my high school's marching band and colorguard...i used to go downstairs to the bandroom to hang out with 'em before the school day started and sometimes during lunch hour. goodtimes.

my friend ethan (he played baritone sax) made it to the front cover of one of the sections of the des moines register when we were in 11th grade--the register did a story on how our high school band had totally outdated/ill-fitting uniforms. ethan's like 6'3" or so, and they had 'im wearing his band uniform...he had his arms outstretched, and the jacket on it was so small the cuffs on his jacket came almost to the crooks of his arms. i still remember that picture, it was crazy.

and i remember the time when the pepsi deliveryman made the fatal mistake of leaving the machine open for a minute or so while he stepped out to his truck for something. all the band kids got free soda that morning...but nobody saved me a pepsi. bastards.

I did this for a good portion of my life, too.

From Australia, we toured California in the marching, concert and stage (jazz) bands and around country New South Wales. I was the alto sax soloist for all of them, so I was a pretty happy 13-16-yr old musician.

We marched in the Anzac Day Parade (commemoration of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) here in Sydney often... good times.

Nero is a SERIOUS band geek.

I was a total band geek in junior high. I played flute and piccolo, first chair (which basically meant I was in charge of my section, the rest of the flutes). We weren't really big like the bands Miguel was in, but we almost always beat other local junior high bands in competition.

The high school my parents made me go to didn't have a band program until my junior year, and even then it was really small. If it wasn't for that, I probably would be majoring in music now.

Does anyone still play their instrument regularly?

Uh huh. I'm taking an AMus (professional-level exam) in alto sax in May. In fact it's taking up most of my time working towards it actually.

I'm working towards making music my living...either teaching sax or going professional with my own songwriting and composition. I play other instruments too. So yeah, I put the sax down for a couple of years but decided I didn't want an office job!

I fuckin' hated being in the marching band, but my mama made me be on the band for a while. She was like "I paid all that money for your flute, now you're gonna play it" I didn't mind playing the flute....I loved it, but going out there in the hot ass sun after school practicing when I'd rather be at home watching cartoons was awful to me. I enjoyed concert band though....both middle school and high school. We didn't have too many people on our band, which was another reason why it wasn't as fun. Our uniforms were tuxedos too. Oh my god....me in a tuxedo....cumberbund, neck tie and all. I hated it wearing them.....I wanted one of those flashy uniforms with the headpiece and cape.....you know like this one.
they're an awesome band,btw.

I still have my band tux. I was supposed to return it, but I never did. So it's still sitting in the back of my closet.

no,but I still have it. One of the pads fell off though, so I need to get it repaired if I wanna play it again. The beauty of playing the flute was that it was sooo small, and you never had to worry about buying things like reeds for it. Everybody else had these cumbersome instruments lugging around, and mine would simply fit in my backpack.

I'm a band geek too Our school was too small and poor to have a marching band but I was in the jazz band and the concert band. I played the flute, clarinet,bass clarinet and took a year of violin. My best friend played french horn and I tried to play it but I just don't have the chops for it.
Now my girls are taking lessons and I play music with them.
