job applications--reality vs fantasy

why is it that when people fill out applications, they put the most unreal expectations down and think they will get hired? i've been in retail management for 15 years, and i still see some really bizarre shit.

no experience at all, but want top $$
bankers hours--9-5, m-f
every holiday off
horrible grammar/spelling
no references

and then if they do get an interview:

come dressed in jeans/t-shirt, or like they getting ready to be in a Luke video
hair not combed, unshaven

can't answer basic questions about the company they're applying for
"do you know what we sell here?" "no"

can't answer basic personal questions
"what is your best quality" "i dunno"

mad

and then get mad when you don't hire them evil
you look better on your facebook page than you do in person hmph!

News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

What annoys me is when foreigners have a business, say maybe something in a food court, and can't speak English. Or ghetto corner liquor stores where they point diffreent products you asked for until they find the right one.
How the hell can you be in business and not speak the language?
But, no suprise at all, they can curse very well and will tell you "fulk rou" in a minute.

Wow, what a pretty ignorant statement. Maybe the domestic population would like to work 14 hour days 7 days a week? nod

apparently not dark sombre colours like navy or black, but not bright red or yellow either. Beige, pale blue etc. Nothing tight, no crazy jewellery unless it's an artistic or creative type job. Comfortable, stylish and understated and relevant to the job in question. Hope this is helpful.

This all sounds sensible. I'd also like to add that the hair shouldn't be too well-crafted in a tight bun or something like that because then it looks like you're trying too hard to look "professional". At the same time you don't want to look too "loose and sexy" either with a short skirt and bright red lipstick. Unfortunately this is a balance act that women often have to master since men often judge their looks in terms of sexiness/unsexiness where sexy = unprofessional but nice and unsexy = professional but not as nice. So...erm...yes, it's a lose-lose situation in a way.

Of course it's not just the male employers that have to be satisfied, it's the female employers too, but in all honesty I think they look at the sex factor too, i.e. "is that tramp trying to look sexy to get the job?" or "oh, she's an ice queen who's trying to mimic the men's game".

It's all very tricky. lol

hmmm
interesting. I have always worn pants to all my interviews, never felt right in a skirt. I have gotten every job I applied for (which is only 5 jobs so far biggrin)
The last one I had to catch a train to on a windy day and my hair was all over the place despite fixing it up on the train. First thing I said after Hello was "I needn't have bothered brushing my hair on a day like today!" with an angry face. And then smiled so everyone cracked up (the 3 partners interviewed me together) and then the interview was very relaxed and lots of joking around - I very much suited their work environment, that was back in 1997 and I still work for them from time to time. Being yourself helps them get to see what you are like and whether you would fit in on their team. I really don't think sexy (unless the job is pole-dancing or something) should enter the equation eek

Me neither. It's just that it does anyway, relatively often. But like you said, it all mostly depends on the work culture at that particular workplace. Some jobs you just cannot get no matter how qualified you are unless you have a sarcastic sense of humour for example. Either way, it's clear to me that factors that don't strictly have to do with the actual job play a very big part, and you could easily argue that it's too big.

well that's the thing, not just anybody will suit a particular job. My old employers just could never find somebody to replace me, they got used to me and wanted somebody just like me and there just wasn't another that:
didn't mind the job was not glamorous, intended to stay put for a few years, not bitchy, lived nearby and did not have to travel far, did not mind if one partner farted in the office and listened to his "Pie song" cd and sang along tunelessly.
falloff
12 people have had my position since 2000, with no luck

But then again I have the wonderful talent of not being able to smell other people's farts - a true gift!

You would not be able to tolerate the CD single he had of the Pie Song either disbelief - this guy's dad owned a bakery and they made a song to the tune of Click Go The Shears (Aussie folk song) for their TV ads.
