Aw, I feel so ignorant because I've never even heard of this until now! I think I want a government grilled cheese sandwich now.

It made the best grilled cheese sandwiches! We all loved that stuff. biggrin

ya'll got me laughing and crying at the same time.....

i remember those times too..shit, i'm from the southside of chicago(39th & indiana)

gov'ment cheese was very good.especially when you put 'em in grits.

you wanna go there?.i got one for ya'll...

growing up when we couldn't afford pancake mix we would use flour and make ghetto pancakes...

we called them .."clabber cakes".and put jelly on 'em.

being so cold that there was ice on the windows and you couldn't see out of them

makes me appreciate where i'm at now...

the first batches were nasty, i think those were the blocks that you had to cut. Then came the batch where they were precut slices, now those were good.

I could only tolerate it when I cut the cheese myself.

I remember goverment cheese from when I was little. I liked it at first, but when it's in everything you eat you get tired of it.

I think we got powdered milk too, but I really don't remember confuse

Somehow, we used to get this in bulk at our church. Members were free to take some home as they pleased. I didn't like the stuff -- it didn't melt very well.

But those huge bricks of butter were the bomb! nod

Oh God, I remember those big ass bricks of butter. The butter was slammin"!
But the cheese...disbelief

I still can not believe I am the only one who has said they do not like this cheese!
I hated it with a passion. They used to deliver it in the carboard boxes and you had a hell of a time cutting it too. The butter wasn't exactly easy to cut, but at least it tatsed like butter, but I suppose it's hard to mess up butter.

We used to get this when I was a kid and I remember it being the best cheese. Now peeps are coming out of the woodworks saying they hated it.

Please weigh in and tell me, yes or no to US government cheese? Oh, I haven't had it in about 25 years or so, maybe they changed the recipe. I just remember it being tasty as hell lol

Government cheese RAWKED!!!!! We didn't get it in my house, but I remember some of my best friends from when I was really little always had it in their house and their moms made the BEST toasted cheese sandwivhes in the WORLD for us after school!!!!! The closest you can come to that is that big ass overpriced block of Velveeta (which makes killer sandwiches and mac&cheese too), but IT JUST IS NOT THE SAME. And Lord knows, as an adult, in retrospect, I shudder to think WHAT the heck those cheese blocks were REALLY made of, but it was so friggin good, WHO CARES???? Somethings are culinary icons in our culture that need not be tampered with; such as Now&Later candies, frozen chicken pot pies, and hell yes, government cheese!
